CryingZayn Malik Gets Emotional Singing ‘Nights Changes’ in One Direction Tribute 10 Years After His Exit
Zayn Malik just took a major trip down memory lane — and we’re not crying, you are.
During his first-ever show in Mexico for the Stairway to the Sky tour, the 32-year-old kicked things off with One Direction’s iconic “Night Changes.” The emotional choice wasn’t lost on fans, as the performance came *exactly* 10 years to the day since Zayn left the band on March 25, 2015. Talk about a full-circle moment.
The crowd went absolutely feral as the familiar opening chords played, instantly recognizing the track Zayn originally sang alongside Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne. Zayn, visibly moved, let the audience take the lead in belting out the nostalgic ballad.
“It’s the first time I sang that song in 10 years,” Zayn said to the crowd, per fan videos online. “Thank you, that was f—ng amazing. I almost cried at one point. This is insane.”
If that wasn’t enough to hit you right in the feels, Zayn’s heartfelt moment followed a bittersweet milestone. It’s been a decade since he announced his departure from the group, a decision that shocked Directioners worldwide.
“My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band,” Zayn wrote in his 2015 Facebook post. “I’d like to apologize to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart.”
The remaining members continued as a foursome before going on indefinite hiatus in 2016, each pursuing solo careers. Sadly, tragedy struck last October when Liam Payne passed away at age 31 after a fall in Argentina. Zayn reunited with Harry, Niall, and Louis to pay their respects at Liam’s funeral.
At the time, Zayn shared a heartbreaking tribute: “There is no words that justify or explain how I feel right now other than beyond devastated. I hope that wherever you are right now you are good and are at peace and you know how loved you are.”
Looking back, Zayn has been open about his complicated feelings from his One Direction days.
“I feel like I just took things too seriously,” he told Zach Sang in a May 2024 interview. “I’m grateful that I’m able to be happier now. You know, like glass half full versus it being half empty. That’s my choice.”
And while he once described himself as a “negative cloud of energy,” it’s clear Zayn’s stepping into a lighter era — one where the music, and the memories, shine on.
