Country Star Issues Blunt Response After Being Criticized for Her Appearance: ‘I’m Seething’
Lauren Alaina is speaking out after falling victim to body-shamers online.
The country music superstar, 31, who gave birth to her first child, a daughter named Beni Doll Arnold, less than a year ago, took to social media on Tuesday, Feb. 24, sharing an emotional message about the harmful effects that scrutinizing women’s bodies can have on a person’s well-being.
“I’m literally so mad right now. I’m seething,” Alaina began in her video post uploaded to Instagram. “Excuse the hair. I’m ‘momming’ today. We’ve got to change the way we’re talking about women on social media.”
The season 10 American Idolrunner-up then went on to highlight a recent video of her performing live that circulated online and attracted numerous negative comments about her weight.
“A few weeks ago, I saw a TikTok of me up on stage singing, and all of the comments were about my weight,” she said while holding back tears. “I’m eight and a half months postpartum ….People were saying that my tour needed to be sponsored by Ozempic and just horrible things.”
Lauren Alaina Is in Recovery From an Eating Disorder
Alaina, who, in previous interviews, has been open about her past struggles with body image and bulimia nervosa, shared that the recent unwanted remarks hit especially hard, given her personal history.
“It really affected me,” she said. “I am in recovery from an eating disorder that I’ve battled for a very long time. This just really upset me. And, I know better. I’m fine, but I’m also just ticked.”
She Is Seeing Other Artists Getting Criticized for Their Weight
Beyond acknowledging her own healing journey, Alaina voiced deep concern over similar criticism aimed at other women, specifically, another unnamed country music artist, who is at the peak of her career.
“I just saw a video, just now — this is what has really stirred me — of a young, beautiful artist. She is really taking over the world right now, and people are commenting and saying she needs Ozempic,” Alaina said. “I mean, she is perfectly trim, and fit, very healthy, and looks amazing, and probably feels amazing, because she should. And, they’re saying that about her.”
“So, it just really ticked me off,” she continued. “I have an 8-month-old daughter, and we can’t talk about women this way. This is bull crap. If you’re a woman out there and people are commenting on your body, and saying this, myself included, we’ve gotta ignore that, and we all need to be better. This is crazy.”
Alaina is certainly not alone in her feelings, as a handful of her fellow country artists joined in on the conversation in the comments section of the post.
Martina McBride, Little Big Town‘s Karen Fairchild, Caylee Hammack, Ashley Cooke, and Tigirlily Gold’s Kendra and Krista Slaubaugh were some of the artists who added heart emojis and agreed to Alaina’s statements with a resounding “yes.”
