USGA boss speaks out on Tiger Woods’ chances of playing US Open after DUI arrest
Tiger Woods is undergoing treatment in Switzerland after his DUI arrest on March 27, during which cops found hydrocodone pills in the golf legend’s pocket.
He had been hoping to play in the Masters at the time, but now it’s unclear when, or if, he’ll return.
He won’t play in next week’s PGA Championship, and he almost certainly will miss next month’s U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton.
“I’d be super surprised,” USGA CEO Mike Whan told Sports Illustrated regarding whether Woods could make it to the U.S. Open. “It would be wonderful for the event, and if he was ready, it would be wonderful for him.

“Obviously what he’s going through is much bigger than golf. He’s proven before that when he puts his mind to something, he’s going to be great at it. I’m sure he has a lot of years to play USGA championships. I don’t think he’s going to play in any 2026 USGA championship. If he ends up playing in USGA championships, great. But when I think of Tiger, my friend, that’s not really what’s important to me right now.”

Woods, 50, passed a field sobriety test after rolling his SUV over near his home in Jupiter Island, Fla. but refused to take a urine test.
Bodycam footage from the arrest showed Woods admitting he took “a few pills” earlier in the day.
Woods has taken painkillers for a litany of injuries over the years.
He tore his Achilles last year and underwent back surgery in the fall.

“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods wrote in a statement days after his arrest. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.”
