Britney Spears Takes Plea Deal Following Stint In Rehab

Britney Spears

Britney Spears has reached a plea deal regarding her recent DUI charge. According to TMZ, the charge has now been reduced to ‘wet reckless.’ However, the outlet did note that the plea deal comes with conditions.

“Notably, she’ll be placed on 12 months probation, which could be a problem if she violates the law in the next year,” TMZ reports. “She also cannot possess drugs without a valid prescription…If Britney violates any conditions of during her probation, she could be sentenced to jail.”

Britney’s lawyer, Michael Goldstein, has since released a statement regarding the reduction of her DUI charge.

“Through her plea today, Britney has accepted responsibility for her conduct,” he told TMZ. “She has taken significant steps to implement positive change which is clearly reflected in the Ventura County District Attorney’s decision to reduce the charge in this case and dismiss the DUI. Britney appreciates this discretion and is also grateful for the outpouring of support she has received.”

It’s worth noting that Britney did not attend her hearing. Instead, Goldstein appeared in her place. The hearing took place in the Ventura County courtroom. The plea deal Britney has agreed to will give her credit for time spent in custody. She’s also required to complete a DUI class and pay some state-mandated fines.

Britney Spears Checked Into Rehab Following Her DUI Arrest

Britney was arrested for a DUI on March 4. As such, she opted to check herself into a rehab facility. A rep for the superstar singer provided a statement to PEOPLE at the time.

“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully, this can be the first step in a long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time,” the rep said in a statement. “Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue plan to set her up for success for well-being.”

Britney will likely need to keep a driver on retainer for the foreseeable future.
