Amazon’s Doctor Who Reboot Casts Harry Styles as First ‘Dr Who’
The BBC and Amazon MGM Studios are delighted to confirm that Harry Styles will take on the lead role in the upcoming reboot of the long-running sci-fi series, newly reimagined under the title Dr Who.
Following the conclusion of Doctor Who in its current form this May, the new version of the series will launch with an entirely fresh continuity, a new cast of companions, and a bold creative direction. Dr Who will air on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK and Ireland, and stream exclusively on Prime Video in territories outside the UK.
Best known for his globally successful music career and acclaimed roles in film and television, Styles will portray the new first Doctor, bringing a unique energy to the role as the series embarks on a new era.
Harry Styles said:
“I’ve always loved stories that explore time, identity, and adventure. Taking on Dr Who is an enormous honour, and I can’t wait to travel through time in something other than a tour bus.”
Ncuti Gatwa, who departs the role later this spring, said:
“Harry’s going to be brilliant. The man already dresses like he’s halfway across the vortex, and that’s before he even sets foot in the TARDIS. I’m genuinely excited to see where he takes it.”
Tim Davie, BBC Director-General, said:
“This marks a new chapter for one of the BBC’s most iconic titles. Dr Who will offer fresh stories and perspectives while celebrating everything audiences have loved about the show for over 60 years.”
Vernon Sanders, Head of Television at Amazon MGM Studios, added:
“We are thrilled to be working with the BBC on Dr Who. Harry Styles brings global appeal, creative ambition, and a sense of wonder that fits perfectly with this new vision of the series.”
Production on Dr Who is set to begin later in 2025, with further casting announcements to follow later this year.
