Country Singer Offers an “Apology” for His Unfiltered Beyoncé Criticism—but Not Really

If you were waiting for Gavin Adcock to apologize for his controversial statements about Beyoncé’s Grammy-award-winning album ‘Cowboy Carter,’ you’re going to have to wait a little bit longer.
The “Last One To Know” singer continues to double down on the comments he shared with the audience at one of his recent concerts that appeared in a viral video earlier this week. In that clip, he holds a beer in his hand and said there were “only three people in front of me on the Apple Music country charts, and one of them’s Beyoncé” and added that the album “ain’t country music.”
He adds, “You can tell her we’re coming for her f—-n’ a–.”
The nominee for New Artist of the Year at the 2025 Academy of Country Music Awards then explained his stance in a follow-up video he posted on his social media earlier this week.
“When I was a little kid, my mama was blasting some Beyoncé in the car. I’ve heard a ton of Beyoncé songs and I actually remember her Super Bowl Halftime Show being pretty kick-ass back in the day, but I really don’t believe her album should be labeled as country music,” he said in the post. “It doesn’t sound country, it doesn’t feel country, and I just don’t think that people that have dedicated their whole lives to this genre and this lifestyle should have to compete or watch that album just stay at the top just because she’s Beyoncé.”
Adcock’s Apology isn’t an Apology
The new 10-second July 3 clip, which features a “Here’s my apology” banner at the top, shows a shirtless Adcock in his bed talking about how he was “dreaming” all night. The caption reads, “I guess I’m just a hogmog.”
“I just wanted to wake up and tell you that shit ain’t country,” says a smiling Adcock.
Is Adcock his ‘Own Worst Enemy’?
Call his latest addition to the controversy what you will. It’s certainly doing wonders in raising Adcock’s profile as he gears up for the release of his aptly titled album ‘Own Worst Enemy,’ which arrives on August 15.
On the other hand, Beyoncé stated in an Instagram post that ‘Cowboy Carter’ was inspired by a moment when she “did not feel welcomed” in country music and that it “ain’t a Country album.” Since then, the album has topped Billboard‘s Country Albums chart and finally earned the artist her first Grammy award for Album of the Year.
