Golfer Tommy Fleetwood Reveals His Stepson Was in the Hospital After a Spinal Operation During His Tour Championship Win

The professional athlete is stepdad to stepsons Oscar and Murry “Mo,” and dad to son Franklin, 7, whom he shares with wife Clare

Tommy Fleetwood is sharing why his whole family couldn’t be by his side during his recent win at the Tour Championship.

The professional golfer, 34, was interviewed by reporters ahead of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and was asked by a reporter why his family wasn’t pictured celebrating with him after he won the Tour Championship this past August.

“So our middle boy, Mo, had a spinal operation just over a month ago now. So they were unable to travel,” Fleetwood responded. “Actually, the week of Memphis, they were in the hospital and he was recovering, and then they eventually got home just before we got home.”

“So he had three and a half weeks, I think, in the hospital, so that was why they weren’t there. But Oscar came out to be with me,” the professional athlete said of his other stepson, Oscar.

Back in August, Fleetwood triumphed and won the FedExCup after coming close to placing first twice in the past two months.

Fleetwood won by three shots over Patrick Cantlay and Russell Henley, besting the field with a -18 in the PGA Tour season finale.

“It’s easy for anybody to say that they are resilient, that they bounce back, that they have fight,” Fleetwood told reporters after his win. “It’s different when you actually have to prove it.”

Through it all, Fleetwood said his family has made the challenges he’s faced on the course tolerable.

“I’m so blessed by the family that I have,” he said after the tournament, referring to his wife, Clare, 57, their son Franklin, 7, and his two stepsons, Mo and Oscar. “And the love that surrounds me and the support that I get that it just makes everything that much easier, really.”

After clinching the win, Fleetwood embraced his stepson Oscar, who teared up as the crowd chanted, “Tommy, Tommy, Tommy.”

Fleetwood and his wife Clare met in 2015 through his brother Joe, and she became his manager shortly afterward. Although she was initially hesitant to start a relationship with him, the two turned their relationship romantic that same year and married in 2017.

“The whole family, we’re unbelievably close,” he said on a November 2024 appearance on the Fore Play podcast. “The first two are stepkids, which honestly, I never really think of them as stepkids. I’ve been around a long time now … The relationship that we have, we’re so close.”
