Tiger Woods’ son may be tipped to follow in his footsteps by pursuing a golfing career but his daughter, Sam, isn’t interested in the sport.
The golf icon’s son, Charlie, hasn’t yet achieved his father’s consistency that catapulted him to fame. However, after a long hiatus, Charlie clinched victory at the Team TaylorMade Invitational, hinting that he might be following in his father’s footsteps.
On the other hand, Sam is more inclined towards soccer than golf. According to Woods himself, Sam doesn’t want to take up golf like her father and brother because she associates it with “negative connotation.” Woods gave an honest explanation about why Sam doesn’t play golf like him and Charlie.
“She has, I think, a negative connotation to the game because at that time… when she was growing up, golf took daddy away from her,” the 49 year old revealed last year.
“I had to pack, and I had to leave and I was gone for weeks and there was a negative connotation to it. So we developed our own relationship, our own rapport that’s outside of golf, that we do things that don’t involve golf. Meanwhile, my son and I, we do everything golf-related. It’s very different.”
Back in 2018, Woods openly expressed that he’s cool with his kids not taking up golf as long as they stay active. He revealed then that his children were into soccer, with Sam still playing the sport.

“They’re keen into soccer,” he remarked. “If they want to play golf, that’s great. If they don’t, that’s fine, too. As long as they have a good time playing sports.
“I find that a lot of fun now, to be able to physically get out and pass the ball around with them. I get such a big kick out of watching them compete and play. It’s so much fun to see how happy and passionate they are about soccer.”
However, Charlie eventually hung up his soccer cleats to dedicate himself to golf under his dad’s guidance, which has recently started to pay off. Despite missing out on the U.S. Open for the second year running, Charlie clinched his first Amateur Junior Golf Association title by leading the pack at the Team TaylorMade Invitational.
During his victorious moment, Charlie shared that he kept his mind solely on the game. “I didn’t look at the leaderboard once today,” he mentioned.
“On the fairway after hitting the green on 18, he’s [Woods’ caddie] like, ‘You make par here, you’re going to be fine.’
“Being able to say to myself that I won an absolutely amazing event and to say I performed under some high-pressure situations is just huge going forward.
“I haven’t been able to say that I have done that, and now that I can, it is just a big thing for my mental game going forward.”
