Country superstar Tim McGraw does not pretend that he has always been an upstanding family man. On fellow country star Tracy Lawrence’s podcast this week, he and Lawrence reminisced about their wild old days when they were coming up in the country music world in the 1990s — specifically, when Lawrence got shot four times 34 years ago.
“When I got shot back in the early ’90s, when I woke up in the hospital, he was one of the first people I saw,” Lawrence said of his buddy McGraw.
In case you didn’t know, on May 31, 1991, Lawrence and a female companion were robbed at gunpoint in the parking lot of a hotel in Nashville. Lawrence was shot four times; his recovery actually delayed the release of his debut album, Sticks and Stones.
According to KBOE, Lawrence said in an interview in 1996 that he was lucky to be alive after the incident.
“The bullet that’s still in my hip missed a main artery by a tenth of a millimeter. If it had severed, I would have bled to death in three minutes. I’m lucky to be alive. I had nightmares about it for a long time,” said Lawrence.
And on the podcast, Lawrence and McGraw laughed about how their wild ways had to stop once McGraw met his wife, Faith Hill — at least, they had to stop for McGraw.
“I tell everybody all the time, Faith really didn’t let me come around after y’all got together,” recalled Lawrence with a laugh. “I tell everybody you blamed all that s**t on me.”
“Of course I did!” McGraw replied, “Anything that went wrong, that’s Tracy’s fault. ‘Tracy Lawrence made me do that.’”
“First off, meeting my wife saved my life. I mean, I was a wild man,” added McGraw. “She turned my life around, I couldn’t have found a better woman. Not only beautiful and talented, but just a good, good person. And then having our daughters…it’s life-changing. They make you a better person, and they certainly calm the demons.”
Hill, 57, and McGraw, 58, got married in 1996 and share daughters Gracie, 28, Maggie, 26, and Audrey, 23. McGraw said that becoming a father was life-changing, and Lawrence agreed, saying that having kids “took away a lot of the selfishness” he was accustomed to in his life. Lawrence, 57, and his wife, Becca, have two daughters, Skylar, 23, and Mary, 22.
“I started thinking about other people besides myself, and that was a good change for me. I was always very self-absorbed,” admitted Lawrence, to which McGraw replied, “It changed everything about my life. It changed my perspective, it changed the way I thought about what my future would be. It certainly took me out of myself.”
