‘Didn’t get it done’ – Dejected Tommy Fleetwood’s telling interview moments after record-extending $3.6m heartbreak
Tommy Fleetwood gave a spirited response after his PGA Tour drought extended to 162 events without victory.
The Englishman finished tied-for-third alongside Scottie Scheffler at the FedEx St.Jude Championship, one shot behind eventual winner Justin Rose, who beat JJ Spaun in a dramatic play-off.

It was particularly disappointing end for Fleetwood, who looked as though he would finally end his wait for a maiden PGA title in Memphis.
The 34-year-old entered the final round in the lead, and held a two-shot lead with three holes remaining.
But a par-bogey-finish saw him overtaken by both Rose and Spaun, with the former holding his nerve in the third sudden-death hole in the play-off to take home the $3.6million winner’s prize.
Fleetwood’s latest collapse came less than two months after he also missed out on glory at the Travelers Championship in June.
Having held the 54-hole lead heading into the final round, he looked set to end his title wait then.
However, the Merseysider bogeyed two of the final three holes, as he finished one shot behind Keegan Bradley in a tie for second.

And despite suffering another agonising near miss in Tennessee, Fleetwood focused on the positives of his consistent finishes near the top of leaderboards.
When asked how he felt after falling short, he replied: “I don’t know, really. I don’t know yet.
“I’m obviously going to be disappointed. I said it last time, there’s a lot of positives to take, as much as I won’t really feel like that right now.
“I’m just going to look at what I feel I could have done and how close it was.

“But, we move on, there’s another week next week and I’ve just got to reflect on today, keep pushing forward and try and put myself in that position again.”
Fleetwood, who has now recorded 43 top 10 finishes in his 15 years on the PGA Tour, admitted he was encouraged by his recent displays.
He went on: “I’m getting close. That’s the good side of it.
“I’m obviously disappointed, but when you look at the positives, I was right there with a chance. It’s hard to win. I just didn’t get it done.”
Fleetwood added: “All these experiences and these close calls, there’s no point in making or allowing them to have a negative effect on what happens next. What would be the point?”
A day before his eventual collapse at the FedEx St.Jude Championship, the world no.9 had shared a similar perspective on the story of his career so far.

He said: “I would way rather be there and fail, than not be there at all,
“I just look forward to the opportunities, giving myself a chance, chasing my dreams.
“Whether they happen or not — that’s another story. But I’m looking forward to it nonetheless.”

While a PGA title continues to elude Fleetwood, he has certainly been handsomely rewarded for all his efforts.
According to PGA statistics, he has amassed a total of $32.5m (£24m) in prize money to date, including his latest $1.16m cash prize in Tennessee.
His remarkable consistency near the top of leaderboards has also seen him record 29 top five finishes on the PGA Tour, six of which have come this season.

Elsewhere, Fleetwood is a seven-time champion on the DP World Tour, while he is a two-time major runner-up, having finished in second place at the 2018 US Open and The Open in 2019.
The golf star has also enjoyed success on the Olympic stage, claiming a silver medal for Team GB at the 2024 Games in Paris.
