Tennessee Congressman Calls For Investigation Of NFL & NBC Over “Indecent Broadcast” Of Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Halftime Show

UPI/Alamy Live News
Really? This is what we’re spending our time on?
A congressman from Tennessee is calling for an investigation into the NFL and NBC over…the Super Bowl halftime show.
Of course the halftime show was controversial before it even started when the NFL announced that Bad Bunny, a Puerto Rican rapper and outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, would be headlining the performance at Super Bowl LX.
Ahead of the show, critics of the NFL’s decision pointed to Bad Bunny’s sexually suggestive lyrics, his history of dressing in drag, and of course, his previous anti-ICE comments while calling for the league to reconsider featuring him at halftime.
The decision even led Turning Point USA, the organization founded by the late Charlie Kirk, to launch an alternate halftime show, dubbed the All-American Halftime Show and featuring Kid Rock, Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice and Gabby Barrett.
Ahead of the Super Bowl, and in the wake of Bad Bunny’s anti-ICE comments at the GRAMMYs last weekend, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he expected the halftime show to be a unifying moment:
“Bad Bunny was, and I think that was demonstrated last night, one of the great artists in the world. And that’s one of the reasons we chose him. But the other reason is he understood the platform he was on, and that this platform is used to unite people and to be able to bring people together with their creativity, with their talents, and to be able to use this moment to do that. And I think artists in the past have done that. I think Bad Bunny understands that, and I think he’ll have a great performance.”
Well that was probably wishful thinking on behalf of the commissioner, given how divided things are right now, but Bad Bunny seemed to keep the halftime show free of any overt political statements (though there were definitely political messages in his performance). He didn’t dress in drag and he didn’t make any bold anti-ICE or anti-Trump statements.
It was, all in all, a pretty inoffensive performance, especially if you don’t speak Spanish and didn’t understand a word he was saying. Sure, there were women shaking their behinds, but it wasn’t anything you don’t see on TV on a regular basis, and if anything it was LESS graphic than some performances we’ve seen in the past (and I’m not just talking about Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake’s nipplegate).
But apparently Congressman Andy Ogles would beg to differ with me.
The member of the House of Representatives from Tennessee’s 5th congressional district, which includes parts of Nashville, is demanding an investigation into the NFL and NBC for what he calls an “indecent broadcast.”
Ogles shared the letter that he sent to the chair of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, which pointed out explicit lyrics in Bad Bunny’s performance as well as “overtly sexualized movements including widespread twerking, grinding, pelvic thrusts, and other sexually suggestive conduct.”
I feel like this is the plot of Footloose…
The congressman says that despite the show being almost entirely in Spanish, “it relied on songs whose sexual content remained readily apparently across any language barrier.” And he accuses the NFL and NBC of having advanced knowledge of Bad Bunny’s plans (I mean, of course they did?) and failing to “utilize safeguards” to protect viewers.
Ogles says that the halftime show raises “legitimate concerns under federal broadcast indecency standards,” and is requesting that committee open an investigation to examine what the NFL and NBC knew about “the explicit nature of the selected songs” and choreography, as well as whether safeguards “were properly applied or intentionally disregarded.”
In a post on social media, the congressman went even harder at the halftime show, calling it “pure smut” with lyrics that glorified “unspeakable depravities.”
“The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show was pure smut, brazenly aired on national television for every American family to witness. Children were forced to endure explicit displays of gay sexual acts, women gyrating provocatively, and Bad Bunny shamelessly grabbing his crotch while dry-humping the air.
And if that weren’t outrageous enough, the performance’s lyrics openly glorified sodomy and countless other unspeakable depravities. These flagrant, indecent acts are illegal to be displayed on public airways.
That is why I am requesting that the Energy and Commerce Committee launch a formal congressional inquiry into the National Football League and NBC immediately for their prior knowledge, deliberate approval, and facilitation of this indecent broadcast. American culture will not be mocked or corrupted without consequence.”
And look, I’m a Republican, and I’ve never really listened to Bad Bunny, wasn’t all that excited about his halftime show and found it just “meh.” But come on, calling for a congressional investigation? Let’s lock up somebody, ANYBODY, from the Epstein files before we start investigating the Super Bowl halftime show.
The whole thing just comes across as a boomer complaining about kids and their rap music. I mean, I’ve seen more sexually suggestive dancing on country music awards shows – and I’m not just talking about Luke Bryan’s gyrating.
It’s ridiculous, and Ogles and the rest of Congress should probably spend their time investigating more important things than a halftime show they didn’t like.
Honestly, now I’m just mad that he made me defend Bad Bunny.
