Houston rap star Megan Thee Stallion had her set abruptly ended at Coachella to make way for fellow Texan Post Malone.
Toward the end of Megan’s Coachella set on Sunday, her microphone cut out between songs while her dancers were still on the mainstage, and everyone in attendance was waiting for another one of her hit songs.
The “Savage” rapper was the day’s second-highest-billed act of the night, but her performance included star-studded appearances from the likes of Queen Latifah, Ciara and Victoria Monét, had constant technical issues throughout on top of her mic being turned off. The Houston rapper was clearly upset by the continuous problems in her set.
“Somebody better come out here and fix my motherf–king microphone,” Meg said earlier in her set when faced with technical difficulties during her performance.
Towards the end of her performance, Megan had just finished performing her early smash hit “Big Ole Freak,” and the visuals for her popular track Japanese inspired “Mamushi” started to play on the stage’s giant screens as the crowd and Megan began to get hyped for the song as the beat began.
However, the mainstage speakers remained muted, confusing festival attendees waiting to hear more. Jeers started to percolate throughout the crowd, and eventually, chants for Thee Stallion started.
A few people in the audience booed as no music was playing. When the stillness lasted more than a few minutes, the audience started chanting Megan’s name. The rapper’s microphone seems to have gone out at around 9:27 p.m., two minutes after her set end time. The “Mamushi” images vanished from the screen, and a stage camera shot took their place.
Megan was inaudible as she spoke into the microphone. She was heard griping with her mic being silenced, saying, “Don’t y’all do the hotties like that,” and later, “Run ‘Mamushi’ back for the motherf–king hotties.”
As the silence continued and the frustration from the crowd and Megan continued to grow, she said on the livestream, “B—h, they said we gotta go!”
Her dancers continued their routine in confusion until it was clear that the show was being ended abruptly. Megan and her team took a bow and made their way off stage.
Texas rapper/country singer Post Malone was set to headline the night at 10:25 p.m., and though Megan’s performance was over time, it is not a good look to end the performance as abruptly as the festival did, especially with how the crowd was enjoying the show.
Despite the technical issues and the wild cutting off of Megan’s mic, the show and its special guests were well-received, and it’s a shame such a good Coachella performance will be remembered for the wrong reasons.
