While she may be widely remembered as a solo artist by many, there was a time when songwriter Gwen Stefani was also the lead singer of No Doubt, a successful band that was created by her along with her then-boyfriend Tony Kanal. They saw their rise to fame during the mid-1990s with the release of their album Tragic Kingdom.
But what led to her career being remembered by most as a successful solo artist was the sad events that followed in her personal life.
In a recent interview with Variety, the Hollaback Girl singer talked about everything from her personal to her professional life, where she also talked about her break-up with her long-time boyfriend and bandmate Tony Kanal. Along with their split after nine years of being in a relationship, she also revealed that this was the time her brother Eric Stefani left to pursue an animation career.
She said that this feeling of abandonment was fuel for her to rigorously come up with lyrics to new songs and create music, which also catapulted her solo career in the music industry. She said:
“It was a really hard time for me, these were like the only people I’d hung out with — my brother and my boyfriend — and they both quit me! So all of a sudden, I started writing these songs, one after another.”
Her performances throughout her solo career are what has recently awarded a star to her name at Hollywood’s Walk of Fame on October 19th, 2023.

During the interview, she also revealed what propelled her to create lyrics and come up with new tunes that she’s known for today. Stefani said that when she was in high school, she wasn’t like the rest of the kids in her grade. It was only later that she found out that she had dyslexia growing up.
Therefore, while other kids were learning new things in school with relative ease, she was lagging behind her peers. This anger and frustration gave rise to her knack for writing her heart out in the form of songs and music, and the rest is history.
