Christian artist Ben Fuller released a new song with Carrie Underwood that declares the wisdom of the Lord and that His plan for our lives is greater than anything we could ever dream up.
“When I wrote this song, I kept thinking about how difficult life can be and that if I was in control, and it was up to me, I’d make it a lot easier on myself — but I’d never know then how good God’s plan can be,” Fuller said. “I’m so grateful Carrie wanted to share her love for Jesus on a song with me. She was so kind and calm when we were in the studio. And I’m pretty sure I smiled almost as big as God did when she stepped up to the mic that day!”
“Ben is such a talented singer and songwriter, and I love the joy he brings to singing about his faith, which we have in common,” Underwood added. “I was honored when he asked me to sing with him on ‘If It Was Up To Me,’ and I love how our voices blend on such a positive and uplifting song.”
The song focuses on how the Lord uses the pain in our life to point us towards Him. Furthermore, so many of His blessings would be lost on us if everything in this life was easy and we never experienced pain.
“If it was up to me, there’d be no gravel roads / No wounds, no blisters on my soul / Pain might come, but it wouldn’t come for me / If it was up to me, I’d take the easy ride / but I’d miss the grace that changed my life / Thank God I’m not the one in charge of things / I’d never know how good Your plans could be / If it was up to me,” the duo sing for the chorus.
Fuller sings from personal experience as his life has been full of pain and misfortune, though he has found hope and freedom through the Lord. Having struggled with addiction for years, Fuller found the things of this world empty, but in Christ he has found new life and is now on fire for the Lord.
“I struggled so much,” Fuller told JOY FM. “At 16 years old, I wanted to die…I didn’t think anybody loved me. I had it all together on the outside, and on the inside, I was just empty. That turned into 14 years and a half of cocaine, alcohol, sleeping around, just these addictions that I couldn’t break and that I thought I would find comfort in and that turned out to just be empty. Void after void after void.”
Praise the Lord for the change Fuller has experienced and the musical talent he has been given to encourage others to turn to Christ rather than continue to walk towards their own destruction.
