American Idol season 23 judge Carrie Underwood had some kind words for a contestant that prove that she’s going to be amazing in her new role, and that she’s not failing at it.

After Katy Perry announced that she was leaving American Idol after her seven-season stint alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, Carrie was announced as her replacement. Carrie won American Idol season 4 in 2005 and has since become a global superstar, so she was the perfect choice to take Katy’s place.

However, ahead of the American Idol season 23 premiere, Carrie has faced backlash because she performed at President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Because some fans have vowed to boycott the show as long as Carrie is on it, some feel that she’s already failing as a judge. During a preview clip shared on the American Idol Instagram page, Carrie had a kind comment for auditioning contestant Breanna Nix of Denton, Texas. The clip began with Carrie saying, “The thing that excites me the most about American Idol is being able to be part of somebody’s story. People bring their kids in, and I get to snuggle with a kiddo watching their mom.”

In the preview, Breanna asked Carrie if her son could sit with her while she auditioned, which Carrie answered with an enthusiastic yes. When she introduced herself, Breanna said, “I’m just a stay-at-home mom.” As Carrie held Breanna’s son in her lap, she replied, “Never say I’m just a stay-at-home mom.”

Breanna then said of her son, “To know that he’s watching his mama go chase after her dreams, I just hope that one day he’ll do the same thing.” After Breanna auditioned with Carrie’s song, “Jesus, Take The Wheel,” Carrie hugged her. Then Carrie gushed, “It was an honor to listen to you sing that song.“

Carrie’s supportive comment to Breanna proves that she cares about the contestants’ well-being, and she hopes that they’ll succeed. She wants them to know their self-worth, so she’ll be intentional with her words in order to help them to achieve their full potential.

Carrie wanted Breanna to know that being a stay-at-home mom is one of the most valuable jobs that a person can have, and to be proud of her life. This is exactly the way that Katy was when she was an American Idol judge, so Carrie is definitely following in her footsteps.

Although Carrie’s status as an American Idol winner and music superstar makes her more than qualified to be a judge, it’s actually her kind personality that’s going to make her a tremendous success.

Unlike the FOX era of American Idol, which was a harsh environment in which judges such as Simon Cowell insulted the contestants, the ABC version of the show is kinder and gentler. Carrie will fit in perfectly as an American Idol judge and become a new fan favorite because she’s always been known to have a sweet demeanor.
