What Really Happened Between Blake Shelton and His First Wife Kaynette Williams

Before Blake Shelton was making headlines with Gwen Stefani and even before Miranda Lambert entered the picture, there was one woman who knew him better than anyone else during his early rise, and that was his first wife, Kaynette Williams.
Their love story began in Ada, Oklahoma, where both were born and raised. Although they attended the same high school, their romance did not spark until after graduation. By the time Blake Shelton turned twenty-one, they were officially a couple. Kaynette was more than just a girlfriend because she became Blake’s road manager, tour support, and partner in every way. She stood by him when country radio barely gave him a glance and helped carry the weight as he chased his dreams.
In 2003, when Shelton’s star was just beginning to rise, he proposed to Kaynette after a hunting trip. There was no candlelight or champagne, just a man with muddy boots and a promise. The two tied the knot in a private ceremony in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, while Blake was on a break from touring with Toby Keith. Kaynette wore a Demetrios wedding gown, and Blake, true to form, wore his Wranglers with boots and a cowboy hat. He even serenaded her with Conway Twitty’s “Julia.”

But just three years later, their marriage came to an end. Kaynette filed for divorce in 2006 and cited inappropriate marital conduct. Around that time, Blake had performed a duet with Miranda Lambert at the 100 Greatest Duets concert on CMT, and, by his own admission, he began catching feelings. He later said, “I was falling in love with her right there on stage.” That kind of heartbreak is brutal, especially when played out in public.
Shelton later admitted that he was not ready to be a husband and called the divorce one of the toughest chapters of his life. He even compared it to the emotional pain he felt after losing his brother. Those feelings poured into his 2007 album Pure BS, which he wrote and recorded while navigating the breakup. Songs like “Don’t Make Me” captured the raw emotion of those days and the inner turmoil he felt.
After the split, Kaynette returned to Oklahoma, hoping for a fresh start. However, when Blake and Miranda moved into a nearby town, it became too much. As she told The National Enquirer in 2011, “It just felt like Oklahoma wasn’t big enough for all of us.” She left for Kansas, where she started over.
In Kansas, Kaynette found a new purpose. She became a fourth grade teacher and math facilitator and was later honored as Teacher of the Year in her district for the 2018 to 2019 school year. She also earned her master’s degree during that time and built a life far from the spotlight of country music.
She also found love again. Through mutual friends, she met Cody Joe Scheck, a world record holding steer roper and professional rodeo champion. The two hit it off instantly and, by all accounts, they have been inseparable ever since. They married quietly and now live a peaceful life in Kiowa, Kansas, far away from cameras and celebrity buzz.
Kaynette Williams may not have remained in the spotlight, but her story is one of resilience, reinvention, and quiet strength. She was there before the fame and helped Blake lay the foundation of a career that would one day take over country radio. And when it all fell apart, she did not crumble. She rebuilt her life with purpose and dignity.
That kind of strength is not just admirable. It deserves recognition.
