Melanie Hamrick Finally Confirms She and Mick Jagger Are Engaged – but Says Marriage Is Only a ‘Maybe’

The Rolling Stones frontman and retired ballerina began dating in 2014 after meeting in Tokyo

Mick Jagger and Melanie Hamrick are engaged!

The former ballerina confirmed in an interview with French publication Paris Match published Wednesday, April 9 that she and the Rolling Stones frontman are engaged. “We’ve been engaged two or three years,” Hamrick, 37, told the publication, per a translation from French.

However, she said that she and Jagger, 81, don’t plan to tie the knot. “Maybe one day we’ll marry, maybe not. We are so happy in our current life that I would be too afraid to change anything,” she said.

She also spoke about the secret to their relationship: “We try to support each other, be there for each other, and make sure everyone is happy. That’s all that matters to me and all I strive for.”

Almost two years prior, Hamrick told PEOPLE about the ring when her debut novel First Position was released, playing coy about the meaning behind her massive diamond.

“I mean, I have to giggle because did Mick give me the ring? Yes. Is it for that finger? Yes,” she said at the time, referring to the sparkling diamond. “But are we like, horny teenagers where we’re giving each other… In my mind, it’s a promise ring. We’ll be immature and call it a promise ring.”

Hamrick and the “Beast of Burden” singer met in February 2014 when they were both on tour in Japan — him with the Stones, her with the American Ballet Theatre. Hamrick and her friends connected with Jagger backstage at a Rolling Stones show.

When asked by Paris Match if there was a spark upon meeting Jagger, she said “Maybe a spark, but nothing incredible, like, ‘Come on, I’ll blow your mind and we’ll travel the world,’ ” she said, translated from French. “We didn’t even exchange phone numbers. At the time, I wasn’t in a relationship, but he was.”

Their relationship became romantic four months later when Jagger invited her to join him in Zurich. They welcomed Jagger’s eighth child Deveraux Octavian Basil in 2016, who inherited his parents’ dance genes.

“He dances a ton,” Hamrick told The New York Times in 2019 about Deveraux. “I don’t have him in classes yet. He plays the ukulele and makes up songs. He’s got the gene. Definitely. I really want him to take tap. For a little boy to make some noise with his feet? He loves music classes.”

Jagger and Hamrick collaborated on the ballet Porte Rouge in 2019, which saw Jagger’s music from the Rolling Stones catalog pair with Hamrick’s choreography. She said they “had a lot of fun working on it” and would like to collaborate again — just not right away.

“I’ve been keeping work separate. For me personally, I prefer that because then it’s kind of fun,” she Hamrick told PEOPLE.

“We are in such similar careers, to keep it separate is better. You’re working with the person all day, and then you’re with them at night. It’s like, too much of each other. And then it’s nice to have outside opinions, someone that isn’t in it with you. They can give you really solid advice. So I prefer the separation from work.”
