Remember when you thought professional golfers lived in their own bubble? Well, think again.
Behind the ropes and away from the cameras, some of golf’s biggest stars are making lifetime impacts. Just ask Noah Kent, who was once a hockey-loving teenager before a chance encounter with Rory McIlroy changed everything. His inspiring story recently caught the attention of CBS reporter Amanda Balionis, who couldn’t help but share it with her followers.
Taking to Instagram this week, Balionis highlighted what she called “one of my favorite stories this week.” She detailed how McIlroy took just five minutes to speak with a then-13-year-old Kent back in 2017, and it changed his life. “Five minutes might not seem like a whole lot to these athletes out here, but it can really change a kid’s life,” Kent reflected in the post shared by Balionis.
Rory McIlroy’s brief encounter transformed a young athlete’s life
The story began at the 2017 U.S. Open after McIlroy missed the cut. Instead of rushing off in disappointment, the Northern Irishman stopped to chat with young Kent. The Florida teenager asked McIlroy a simple question about his powerful swing despite his height. “I was a hockey player at the time and I kind of just looked up to Rory and I was just like ‘How do you hit it so far like you’re not that tall,’” Kent recalled.
McIlroy’s answer was simple yet profound. “He kind of just pointed at the ground, he’s like ‘It’s all on the legs,’” Kent explained. That brief interaction sparked something in the young hockey player. He immediately quit all other sports and dedicated himself to golf.
The gamble paid off spectacularly. Eight years later, Kent stands 6-foot-5 and has evolved into an accomplished amateur golfer. His runner-up finish at the 2024 U.S. Amateur Championship earned him an invitation to the 2025 Masters. And in a beautiful full-circle moment, he recently played a practice round with McIlroy at Augusta National.
Balionis emphasized how this story demonstrates the profound impact PGA Tour pros can have on young fans. Through her emotional retelling, she highlighted not just Kent’s journey but also McIlroy’s character. Her post praised the four-time major champion for his continued support of Kent’s development. “He’s got it,” McIlroy reportedly said about Kent’s game during their practice round.
Balionis’s ability to recognize and share these heartwarming stories has become a hallmark of her reporting style.
Amanda Balionis builds her reputation on uncovering golf’s human side
Balionis has been absent from broadcasts since the Genesis Invitational last month. This isn’t unusual, as it’s NBC, rather than CBS, which holds rights to recent tournaments like the Mexico Open and The Players Championship. During this hiatus, she’s been recharging with loved ones before returning for the 2025 Masters at Augusta National.
She recently expressed gratitude on Instagram, writing: “For this time in my happy place, for the once strangers that became family, for all of the dogs, all of the nature.” Her message continued with a nod to the upcoming Masters: “Hey Georgia? I’m comin for ya.” Her excitement about returning to Augusta in just 12 days was evident.
Since joining CBS full-time in 2018, Balionis has covered every Masters, creating memorable moments along the way. Her 2020 interview with an emotional Dustin Johnson after his green jacket victory showcased her talent for revealing athletes’ human sides. This storytelling approach has made her one of golf’s most recognizable broadcasters.
The Noah Kent story exemplifies everything Balionis excels at – finding and amplifying the human connections that make golf special. By highlighting McIlroy’s gesture, she reminds us how brief encounters can change lives forever. Which PGA Tour player inspired your love of golf? Let us know in the comments below!
