Scarlett Johansson is joining Robert Pattinson in Gotham City.

Following rumors that Black Widow actress Johansson, 41, was joining The Batman: Part II, director Matt Reeves’ follow-up to the 2022 DC Comics adaptation starring Pattinson, 40, as The Caped Crusader, her involvement is now official.

Details, however, are scarce. Reeves, 60, continued his tradition of announcing casting in his screen projects by sharing GIFs on his X account on Thursday, May 14. Snippets of Johansson, fellow Marvel star Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance and Sebastian Koch in other screen projects appeared, causing fans to speculate about which characters from the Batman comics they’re playing on the big screen.

Per Entertainment Weekly, Stan, 43, is playing Harvey Dent a.k.a. Two-Face, Gotham City’s district-attorney-turned-criminal-mastermind, while Dance, 79, is rumored to be playing his father Christopher Dent. In an interview published May 11 with Deadline, Stan said filming his role for Batman will be a “challenge.”

“I feel like it’s a really ambitious movie and I think if we do it all right — and obviously I’m so excited about Matt Reeves [directing] because he’s been one of my favorites for a long, long time — I really think it’s going to blow people away,” he said. “It’s going to surprise a lot of people, I think, too.”

As for Johansson, many eagle-eyed fans are taking Reeves’ posts to mean the Oscar-nominee is also playing a member of the Dent family: Gilda, Harvey’s wife.

“Next exit, Gotham… Welcome,” wrote Reeves in his post dedicated to Johansson, which showed a moment from her 2013 movie Under the Skin.

Returning for the sequel in addition to Pattinson are Jeffrey Wright as Head of Gotham PD Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Bruce’s butler Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell as gangster Oz Cobb a.k.a. the Penguin. Zoë Kravitz, who starred as Selina Kyle a.k.a. Catwoman in The Batman, is not expected to return for the sequel, Variety reported last December.

The Batman: Part II is written by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin. Last August, distributor Warner Bros. announced that filming would begin in spring 2026.

Johansson has a busy schedule ahead; she is currently filming the Mike Flanagan-directed The Exorcist (in theaters March 12, 2027), will lead James Gray’s upcoming film Paper Tiger and lent her voice to the Netflix animated movie Ray Gunn.
