Whoopi Goldberg had a heated exchange with Alyssa Farah Griffin and said it’s hard to have conversations with ‘people who support people who think you don’t matter in the country’
Whoopi Goldberg clashed with her The View co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin over an argument about how to communicate with people who voted for Donald Trump in the latest presidential election.
The heated exchange between the 69-year-old TV personality and the 35-year-old political strategist, who was the White House director of communications in 2020 and resigned from her post about a month before the January 6 Capitol insurrection in 2021, began when Alyssa said Democrats need to be willing to converse with Trump supporters and “find areas of agreement.” The former Trump adviser supported Kamala Harris in the 2024 election but said she agrees with some of Trump’s positions, including parts of Project 2025.
The political initiative aims to reshape the federal government, expanding presidential power and imposing an ultra-conservative social vision. Alyssa said on the ABC show, “Democrats have to be willing to go to uncomfortable spaces.”
But Whoopi replied, “I think this is beyond Democrats and Republicans.” While she admitted she doesn’t fully agree with everything Trump does, Alyssa said Democrats should try to find middle ground, explaining, “You have to have conversations with people who disagree with you if you want to build coalitions to push back. You’re going to find, there are a lot of things Donald Trump does that I agree with. But then there are things I think are dangerous, reckless and want to call out.”

However, Whoopi hit back, “It’s hard to talk to people who support people who think you don’t matter in the country.” The former press secretary said, “But it’s not supporting that person though.” And Whoopi added, “No, no! No no! But when you support that person, it brings …” before being interrupted by her co-host who echoed her point, saying, “But I don’t support that person, my point being, I don’t disagree with everything Trump is doing so we have to be able to have conversations.”
Whoopi later said, “Now, I didn’t find anything of interest for me in Project 2025, I didn’t feel like this was geared to us as a nation. I felt it was geared to very specific folks and that that bothered the poo out of me. But I understand what you’re saying. And yeah, we do have to talk to each other. That’s the beauty.”
It comes days after Whoopi was criticized on social media for making fun of Elon Musk’s son’s name on The View. The TV host, who has been on the show for 18 seasons and hasn’t been afraid to speak her on mind on air when it comes to controversial men like Musk and Trump, said, “Yesterday Elon Musk took his son X to a press conference.”

Her fellow co-host Joy Behar interrupted, “X?” she asked, questioning if that was his name. “I did not name the child, and I don’t want to hear anymore mess about our names, okay, okay,” Whoopi added, speaking directly into the camera.
X users attacked Whoopi for doing so and even said she shouldn’t be the one to talk when it comes to names. “Wow…Whoppi just spent multiple minutes making fun of Elon Musk’s son’s name. Your name is literally WHOOPI,” a user wrote on the social media site.
“Whoopi Goldberg mocking Elon’s son’s name. The same people who cry about ‘bullying’ have no problem doing it themselves,” another wrote on X. “Whoopi Goldberg is now making fun of Elon’s kid’s name as the audience laughs. Picking on a child. She’s evil,” another user wrote on X.
