Zayn reflected on his years in One Direction, admitting his time in the global boyband “didn’t feel authentic”.

“it wasn’t really the type of music I would have been listening to”

He rose to fame in 2010 after appearing on The X Factor, where he was initially rejected as a solo contestant before Nicole Scherzinger stepped in to help form One Direction.

Alongside Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and the late Liam Payne, Zayn became part of one of the most successful pop groups in modern music history.

Despite the band’s huge success, Zayn left in 2015 during the middle of a world tour, saying at the time that he wanted to live a normal life away from the intense pressure and “underlying tensions” within the group.

Speaking about that period, he said creating music outside of the band has allowed him to be more honest with himself and his audience.

He told The Smallzy Show: “As you touched on yourself there, the music we were making in One Direction, it wasn’t really the type of music I would have been listening to if I wasn’t in One Direction at that point.

“It didn’t feel authentic in that sense, but I always feel like the reward of telling the truth and speaking your truth in whichever way you want to frame that, is always way more than refraining from it, you don’t have to tell everybody your favourite colour, what time you went to the toilet, what time you woke up.”

Zayn’s comments come after it was recently reported that he punched former bandmate Louis Tomlinson, which resulted in their Netflix show being axed.

It was claimed that Zayn left Louis injured.

A source claimed: “Zayn started acting up and was mouthing off. It spiralled into a row.”
