Viewers of David Muir’s World News Tonight were shocked to see one dark topic dominate his news coverage on Sept. 17.

The 51-year-old anchor started his coverage on the ABC News show by alerting viewers to a breaking news story that involved the shooting of multiple law enforcement officers in York County, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday. He then touched on the other topics of the night, including Donald Trump’s state visit in the U.K., Robert F. Kennedy’s CDC drama, an update on Charlie Kirk’s shooter, and a killer whale attack.

When Muir began covering the York County police shooting, he fumbled his words saying, “Authorities responding to reports of multiple police officers shot in York County, Pennsylvania, about an osk-hour outside Lancaster, near the Maryland state line.”

He added, “At least three officers are dead.” However, one viewer pointed out that all of the coverage had one dark theme in common: death and violence.

Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed multiple law enforcement officers were shot Wednesday in York County, Pennsylvania. FBI Director Kash Patel said agents are at the scene providing assistance to local and state partners.

“Our prayers are with the officers, their families, and the entire York County community,” Patel wrote in a statement. Meanwhile, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Attorney General Dave Sunday confirmed they were on their way to the scene in separate X posts.

Now, Muir’s coverage confirmed that three police officers were killed and two others were critically injured in the shooting while serving a warrant. Police said the suspect in the shooting has also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The two who were injured were being treated at a nearby hospital, said the commissioner, Col. Christopher Paris. He added they were in critical but stable condition.

According to the BBC, the shooting caused a nearby school district in Spring Grove, Pennsylvania, a town of about 2,500 people, to shelter in place for a short time. The district later said the school was not affected.

“Violence against law enforcement is a scourge on our society and never acceptable,” Bondi wrote in a statement on X. “Pray for the officers involved.”

The New York Times reported that Paris said at a news conference that the officers had come to the area, a rural region southwest of the city of York, to follow up on a “domestic-related” investigation that had begun the day before.
