David Muir fans couldn’t help but voice concerns and fears after the veteran ABC anchor brought news of an attack on U.S. soil amidst the ongoing war in Iran to his World News Tonight viewers.

The anchor, 52, quickly started off the Thursday, March 12, episode of the evening news show with updates on the war in Iran, as well as a series of brutal attacks and events that occurred in the U.S. that same day, including one incident in Michigan and another in Virginia.

As he reported on the news of the two events–a truck ramming into a synagogue with a preschool in it and a shooting at a university–many quickly shared concerns that the attacks were a sign of more things to fear in the U.S., as the conflict in Iran continues to heat up.

“We begin tonight with the horrific scene unfolding at one of the largest synagogues in the U.S.,” Muir began his report. “Authorities say a driver rammed his truck through the barricades and smashed through the front door of Temple Israel, right outside Detroit. Smoke seen coming from the building.

“Sources telling ABC News, the driver was armed with a rifle,” he continued. “The Oakland County sheriff says armed security opened fire, the suspect’s truck bursting into flames.”

“140 children among those inside, at a preschool. The race to get the children out, the attacker is dead tonight,” he added. “Investigators are trying to determine a possible motive.”

“The war is coming to our doors,” one person said on Instagram, while another wrote, “Heartbreaking!!!!”

“Well you can thank your president he wanted a war right??” another asked, while a fourth said, “America was safer before Israel dragged us into another war.”

Since the attack, the FBI is investigating it as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community,” NBC News reports.

It has yet to be determined if the attack was motivated by the ongoing conflict, but others since the war started on February 28th have been tied to the conflict.

A shooting at a bar in Austin, Texas, on March 1, killed four, including the perpetrator, after an AR-15-style rifle was used to shoot at people gathered at the bar.

The shooter, 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, reportedly was wearing a “Property of Allah” sweatshirt at the time, and the shooting is being investigated as a possible act of terrorism related to the Iran war.

Another attack on March 12 occured at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, when 36-year-old Mohamed Bailor Jalloh opened fire on an ROTC class and instructor.

One person was killed before Jalloh was subdued by students and killed.

Jalloh is alleged to have shouted “Allahu Akbar” before opening fire.
