For most of his career, Tiger Woods had his eyes locked on one record.

He wanted to become the all-time leader in major championship victories, breaking Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18. Unfortunately, injuries and off-course controversies derailed his career in the early 2010s, and while he won The Masters in 2019, Woods remains three short of the “Golden Bear”.

That’s not to say that Woods doesn’t have his fair share of records. Far from it. He is tied with Sam Snead for the most wins on the PGA Tour, he remains the only player to hold all four majors at the same time, and he has the most consecutive cuts made on the PGA Tour with 142.

But there is one Woods record in particular that President Donald Trump singled out as completely unbreakable, and he achieved this at 20 years old.

Trump has a long-standing friendship with the greatest golfer of all time, Woods, and presented him with the Medal of Freedom after his 2019 Masters victory.

During the presentation speech at the White House, Trump named the Woods record that he thinks will never be broken.

He said, “Starting at age 15, he won three successive U.S. Junior Amateur titles. And at 18, he became the youngest-ever winner of the U.S. Amateur tournament. At 20, he capped off his amateur career with an unrivaled third consecutive title. So that would be six in a row.

“And I say that’s a record that can never be broken. That’s an incredible — stroke play, match play, everything. That will never be broken.”

Woods had one of the most dominant amateur careers in the history of golf, highlighted by a historic run of national championships at Stanford University. He made the cut in four majors as an amateur, and won the Masters in 1997 after turning professional.

In addition to being the best we have ever seen, Woods is by far the best young player ever, and Trump is likely right. His performances as a teenager will likely never be bettered.

While Woods’ amateur record shows just how incredible Woods was at such a young age, what was especially amazing about the 15-time major winner is his consistency in his prime. In every event during the early 2000s on the PGA Tour, Woods was certain to be in contention.

Max Homa once said that his record of 142 consecutive cuts made is the best record in sports. He explained: “It’s the most amazing record in sports. I don’t know how you can’t wake up on a Thursday, and something hurts, or you don’t feel good.

“It’s a testament to how well-rounded his game was.”

The back end of Woods’ career has been plagued by injuries, which he was forced to overcome on his way to a Masters victory. It’s therefore easy to forget how consistently healthy Woods was when he was at his best.

It’s a key part of Woods’ legacy, and what made him so successful. If you were ever leading a golf tournament, you knew full well that if you looked over your shoulder, there would be a Tiger hunting you down.
