Rory McIlroy has admitted his lingering back injury is proving “more stubborn than we thought” just days before the start of The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.

The grand slam champion withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill Club & Lodge ahead of the third round on Saturday after suffering low back pain during his pre-round warm-up.

Initially described as a precautionary move, McIlroy has now revealed the injury has taken longer than expected to settle as he races to be fit for one of the biggest tournaments of the PGA Tour season.

Speaking to Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis on Monday, McIlroy admitted he is still undergoing treatment and has delayed travelling to the tournament venue.

“The back is being a bit more stubborn than we thought, so I’m staying at home today and tomorrow to continue treatment in South Florida with the hope to travel to Ponte Vedra on Wednesday at some point,” McIlroy said.

The timing of the injury is far from ideal for McIlroy, with a crucial run of events looming on the calendar.

The Northern Irishman is hoping to defend his title at The Players Championship this week before turning his attention to the season’s first major, The Masters at Augusta National Golf Club from 9–12 April.

McIlroy felt the initial tweak during a workout before the third round at Bay Hill and later admitted he even considered trying to play through the pain.

The World No.2 attempted to test the injury on the practice range but ultimately decided to withdraw to avoid risking further damage.

Video later surfaced of McIlroy leaving Bay Hill alongside long-time caddie Harry Diamond, with the five-time major champion clutching his lower back while acknowledging fans with fist bumps.

At the time, the decision was viewed as a precaution given the importance of the upcoming schedule.

But his latest update suggests the issue may still require careful management before he tees it up at Sawgrass on Thursday. McIlroy WD from Bay Hill last week McIlroy WD from Bay Hill last week

Should McIlroy recover in time, he is scheduled to play the opening two rounds at TPC Sawgrass alongside fellow major champions Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama.

The group would be among the headline pairings at the PGA Tour’s flagship event.

However, McIlroy’s participation now hinges on how his back responds to treatment over the next 48 hours.
