The country singer said there’s a silver lining in the deal, though, because it led him to wife Katelyn

The 32-year-old country singer said that he was just a “normal guy” trying to start his music career on Facebook when he was discovered and introduced to someone who signed a 50/50 profit-sharing contract with him.

“I was just so excited to get signed that I couldn’t wait,” said Brown, who noted he was sleeping in his car at the time to take business meetings since he couldn’t afford hotels. “I didn’t have anybody on my side. I didn’t have my mom. I didn’t have my dad. So I just signed a 50/50 deal.”

The “Woman” singer admitted that he realized the deal was “terrible,” and said he believes it “killed” his career. He did not name the person with whom he signed.

When his first songs started to go viral, Brown said he started to receive interest from a number of labels. But because of his deal, he had to choose Sony.

“I love Sony. This is not against Sony. They’ve been good to me. But I was forced to sign there, and it’s just been so long,” he said. “I just now redid my deal to make it kind of fair. That’s why I’ve been worried my whole career, because I’m like, I’m not getting what I should. If it all went away today, I think I’d be fine, but I don’t have what a lot of people think I have.”

When pressed on just how much money he believes he’s lost due to the deal, Brown said $10 million.

“I asked my business manager,” he said. “I got screwed out of that.”

Regardless, Brown has found a silver lining in the situation. It was because of the unnamed person that he met his wife Katelyn, whom he married in 2018 and with whom he shares daughters Kingsley, 6, and Kodi, 4, and son Krewe, who will turn 2 next month.

“If I wouldn’t have signed with [person], I wouldn’t have my family. I wouldn’t know my wife. I wouldn’t have my kids,” he said. “She used to work with him. He introduced us. I was supposed to be in her music video a year before we actually met, but I had my first show, so I couldn’t do it. So that’s why I always look at it like — if I wouldn’t have done this, I wouldn’t have my family.”

The singer-songwriter said he feels “blessed” with what he does have, and knows that he could still be working at FedEx had his career not taken off.

“I can support my family. We would be living a little bit different life [had the bad deal not happened]. I would be able to give a little bit more away. But it is what it is,” he said. “God’s got a plan for me.”
