You don’t need a man to be happy. That is the message country music star Kacey Musgraves is sending prior to the release of her new album, Middle of Nowhere, on May 1. The acclaimed singer told NPR Music recently that she has been in relationships constantly but now she is taking a refreshing breather from couplehood. Some of the comments she made were in connection with her sassy new song, “Dry Spell.” Every word Musgraves said made sense, so listen up, single ladies!

Musgraves Said, “I Started Really Loving My Singledom”

She told the outlet, “I typically always have been in relationships. This was the longest period in my adult life where I was on my own, and I had gone through a break up. I was taking stock of my relationships and what I want[ed] in my life, and really learning how to lean into being alone. I started really loving my singledom.”

She continued, “It was a long time without any intimacy with anyone else, and I had always feared that before I experienced it, just having this notion that I needed someone to be happy, which I found to be completely untrue.”

Her Lived Experience Distinguishes “Dry Spell”

That incisive self-awareness permeates Kacey Musgraves’ forthcoming work. She shared, “I wrote the title down — ‘Dry Spell’ — and because [it was what I was] going through. I wrote most of this record in the longest single period of my life.”

The track is about a woman who is lonely, longing for intimacy with someone, and not ashamed to admit it. Its sassy lyrics and clever wit earmark it as a big winner for Kacey Musgraves. Penned by the singer along with Shane McAnally, Josh Osborne, and Luke Laird, it’s got “hit” written all over it. She acknowledged, “Nobody does humor better than those guys, and I was craving humor again.”

Humor Matters to Kacey Musgraves

This is someone who really appreciates a great big hearty chuckle. And if it’s inspired by her work, then so much the better. As she said, “I find the human condition pretty hilarious. I feel like the universe has a pretty killer sense of humor, so I just find a lot of humor in the everyday. One of my all-time favorite writers did it best: John Prine. I can be quite introspective and maybe heady or whatever, but I really love anchoring something with that [sense of humor]. I feel like we need to laugh more in this modern crazy time.”
