Two Members of Iconic Country Music Family Are Grammy-Nominated in Same Category: “That Makes Me Real Happy”

When the Grammy Awards are held next year in February, there will be a new category unveiled – Best Traditional Country Album. Two of the nominated LPs are from members of the same family. Legendary Willie Nelson, 92, is up for a statuette for Oh What a Beautiful World. His son, Lukas, 36, is also in the running for his album American Romance. You might think there would be some unavoidable rivalry, but the Nelsons are rising above anything like that. They are truly class acts, and that proves it.

The other nominees in that category are Margo Price for Hard Headed Woman, Charley Crockett for Dollar a Day, and Zach Top for Ain’t in It for My Health.

Lukas Nelson Spoke of Family Pride, Not Vying With Each Other

Per People, Lukas Nelson weighed in on the race for a Grammy between him and his father. They are glad for each other. Forget about rivalry. Per the outlet, Lukas explained, “There’s no rivalry at all. Me and him joined teams, so we got a 40 percent chance. A win for anyone in that group [is a win for me].”

There is a third Nelson who could get a Grammy. Micah Nelson, 35, might get an award “for producing their dad’s album Last Leaf on the Tree, nominated for Best Americana Album,” according to People.

Lukas added, “To be on the bill with Dad is such a special thing. All three of us… I think that makes Dad real proud, and that makes me real happy.”

He Likes Being Recognized as a Solo Artist

Throughout his career to date, Lukas Nelson has been performing and recording typically with other artists. He was either with his band, Promise of the Real, or working with dad Willie. Five years ago, Nelson landed a Grammy for his participation on creating the soundtrack for the hit film A Star Is Born.

With American Romance, however, Lukas finally branched out independently. That brought him a sense of gratification and accomplishment. He mentioned, “It feels like my own. This is the first time that I’ve done something on my own that got that recognition by my peers, and I’m pretty grateful for that,”
