Blake Shelton’s Christmas Tree Topper Had John Legend Frazzled: “What Is This?”

If only The Oddest Couple, starring The Voice Coaches, became a real sitcom!

The Voice Season 22 was jam-packed with electrifying performances, but who could forget when John Legend and Blake Shelton stepped away from the red chair and into the world of classic sitcoms for the holiday episode?

While hanging out backstage of The Voice Season 22, Shelton asked his fellow Coaches — Legend, Camila Cabello, and Gwen Stefani — if they agreed that a sitcom following Legend and Shelton as roommates would be “great.” Just as Legend teased that he and Shelton should recreate an episode of The Odd Couple, viewers suddenly cut to a parody intro sequence to a classic ’90s sitcom, this time with Legend and Shelton as the oddball roommates. The throwback video is an absolute must-watch, especially for those who may miss Shelton on the panel.

As if Shelton and Legend needed any more excuse to bicker, after the roommates decided to throw a holiday house party together, hilarity ensued after Shelton seemed to completely miss the memo.

“Everything is looking perfect for our holiday party,” Legend mused in the bit while putting up some decor around their humble abode. “How’s it going over there, Blake?”

“It’s going great, I’m just putting on the finishing touches now,” Shelton told Legend, placing a cowboy hat on top of the most pathetic Charlie Brown Christmas tree anyone’s seen. Legend grew concerned as the none-the-wiser Shelton cooed, “Perfect!”

“That is…not perfect,” Legend said, mystified. “What is this?”

Shelton told Legend that it was a “hat on a tree,” confused by Legend’s confusion as he claimed that he’d taken hours decorating the less-than-dazzling display. At that blatant exaggeration, Legend had to call out his red chair companion.

“Blake, you did not spend hours on this tree,” Legend said. “You have really got to stop lying.”

After asking Shelton where he’d found the raggedy cowboy hat, Shelton enthusiastically revealed he’d found it in the neighbor’s trashcan and made sure to grab it. “Isn’t it awesome?” Shelton asked.

“Well, at least my side of the room looks good,” Legend shrugged, getting a big chuckle from the audience.

Needless to say, the party preparation between the red chair rivals was chaotic, leading to various tense moments from the two Coaches. As Legend meticulously checked his spreadsheets, he reminded Shelton that he was on food duty.

“Have you done the food?” Legend asked with low confidence.

“Of course,” Shelton said, going for a chip. “I made my world-famous holiday dip.”

“The last time you made dip, I ended up in the emergency room, Blake,” Legend reminded him.

“I still don’t think that was the dip,” Shelton said, coughing while chomping away.

Later during the “episode,” Legend asked Shelton how many guests they were anticipating, worried about making sure they were fully prepared. As Shelton mindlessly watched TV, Legend asked Shelton who he invited to make sure they had enough food.

“Huh?” Shelton asked, truly clueless.

“The invites,” Legend reminded him. “You sent the invites out, right?

“Oh, yeah,” Shelton said nervously. “Yes, of course. It’s all taken care of.”

After Legend headed out to grab a few last-minute party supplies, Shelton suddenly seemed ready to crawl into a hole. “I wonder if he’s gonna be mad that I forgot to send out the invites,” Shelton fretted to the camera, getting another big studio audience chuckle.
