American Idol season 23’s newest judge, Carrie Underwood, was excited at the start of the season to join the show, but after a lack of enthusiasm on her end in recent episodes, it’s possible she may not be coming back for another season.

Throughout American Idol’s history, Carrie has been the first winner to ever return to the series as a judge. After winning American Idol season 4, Carrie went on to become the top-selling winner from the series. While American Idol was a big part of her past, she had no idea it would become part of her future.

As American Idol season 22 came to a close, the big question for viewers who would replace long-time judge Katy Perry, who was leaving. While Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie stayed, there was a vacant seat for a new judge. When it was announced Carrie would be taking Katy’s place, reactions were mixed, but most were hopeful that she’d make her mark on the show. With Carrie in the mix as American Idol season 23 began, it was clear that she needed some time to get settled, but she may not be enjoying the job as much as she’d hoped.

In moments, it seemed like Carrie’s criticisms could be canned, but by the end of the episode it just felt like she’d unplugged from a lot of what was going on.

During the most recent live show of American Idol season 23, Carrie didn’t seem like she was ready or interested to be a part of the judge’s panel. Though she was present and did her best to judge the contestants on their performances, which were all honoring Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees, it was clear that Carrie was feeling a bit distant on the show. Throughout American Idol season 23, Carrie has been working hard to ensure that her judging has been effective and impactful for the contestants. While she may have tried, Carrie didn’t seem entirely engaged.

Talking frequently about the criticism she received on her season, Carrie has been open about wanting to be able to give the contestants feedback that helps them progress. This season has been something interesting for her, as she’s been spending a lot of time revisiting her own journey on American Idol, which could be part of the problem. It’s possible that Carrie could be putting too much pressure on her performance, which may have her feeling like she has to do more than she actually does. While she’s been doing a good job, the most recent episode saw her disengaged.

Carrie May Not Want To Continue Judging On American Idol

She May Not Like The Job Or The Environment

Although American Idol may be a major part of Carrie’s past, it’s not clear if it’s going to be a part of her future. Carrie made her way through the American Idol season 23 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame episode with a lot of difficulty, and it was clear that she wasn’t entirely present. She’s shared that it’s been tough for her to give feedback and deliberate over eliminations, which could mean that Carrie may not be interested in continuing to judge the show in the future. American Idol season 23 could be Carrie’s only appearance as a judge.
