An inside look at Rory McIlroy’s divorce drama has been teased by Netflix in the Season 3 trailer for “Full Swing”.

A behind-the-scenes look at the Northern Irishman’s personal life is set to unfold on screen in the riveting golf documentary series, where viewers will be treated to an exclusive reveal of one of the most jaw-dropping chapters in McIlroy’s career – his surprise split and subsequent patch-up with his wife, Erica Stoll.

The newly dropped trailer for Netflix’s Full Swing series has provided eager fans with a sneak peek of what to expect, with McIlroy’s decision to file for divorce in May 2024 – cutting short his seven-year marriage to Stoll – posing as one of the biggest shocks of the year.

McIlroy had stated their marriage was “irretrievably broken” and had asked for split custody of their daughter, four-year-old Poppy, in his divorce documents – filed a day after he won the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte on May 12, which Stoll did not attend.

Astonishingly, the 35-year-old opted to reverse his decision within a matter of weeks, deciding that staying with Stoll was the best decision for the family moving forward, having managed to resolve their differences.

Before then, however, there were claims that another woman could potentially be on the scene, with a stunning report from the Daily Mail suggesting that McIlroy and CBS reporter Amanda Balionis were “the talk of the links.” Neither of them commented on the report.

McIlroy eventually addressed the rumors regarding his personal life in a statement to The Guardian last June, saying: “There have been rumors about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumor is a fool’s game. Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

The newly released trailer from Netflix captures the raw emotions rippling through Valhalla Golf Club’s media center and clubhouse during the PGA Championship as the bombshell news of McIlroy’s divorce dropped, where someone is heard saying: “Everyone’s phones just started blowing up” before another person adds, “Rory’s divorce.”

It then cuts to a scene in which McIlroy is on the phone while grabbing a duffle bag out of the trunk of his car. With his back turned to the camera, he says: “The Netflix cameras are following me right now, so”.

In a confession to the camera, the PGA Tour legend then states that he’s “struggled with trying to be the best golfer, the best husband, the best dad.”

This series is set to peel back the curtain on McIlroy’s life, delving into the personal battles and professional hurdles he’s faced, and exploring how his off-the-course struggles have possibly affected his game.

After patching things up with Stoll, McIlroy was poised to leave the past behind and clinch a major win at the U.S. Open. However, a devastating last-minute meltdown shattered his hopes of ending a decade-long major drought, paving the way for Bryson DeChambeau to claim the glory.

The Full Swing trailer doesn’t hold back, either, showcasing snippets of DeChambeau’s victory lap, signalling that McIlroy’s agonising defeat will be a central theme in the new season, which hits Netflix on February 25.
