Travis Kelce, the renowned tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, is contemplating his future in the NFL after a brutal 40-22 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl LIX where the 35-year-old made just four catches.
The loss ended Kelce‘s bid for a historic threepeat in one of the most one-sided Super Bowls in history, with the game effectively over by halftime as the Eagles scored more points than the Chiefs gained yards (24 to 23).
Now the man from Ohio, after 12 years playing at the highest level in the NFL, is considering whether he finally dips out of the sport for good to chase after other interests with his legacy in the bag after three Super Bowl titles and countless records.
Particularly after his far-from-stellar showing in New Orleans despite being an instrumental figure for the Chiefs historically, gaining just 39 yards on the night, as he admits the wear and tear on his body could becoming too much.
“I know everybody wants to know whether or not I’m playing next year,” Kelce said on the New Heights podcast. “And right now I’m just kicking everything down the road. I’m kicking every can I can down the road.”
“The fact that we keep going to these AFC Championships and these Super Bowls, that means I’m playing an extra three games than everybody else in the entire league. It can be grueling, it can weigh on you.
“It can make you better, but it can drive you crazy at the same time.”
Kelce doesn’t count out continuing
As one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history, Kelce’s potential retirement would mark the end of an era for the Chiefs, although he has earned the right to finally put up his feet and watch Monday Night Football instead of playing in it.
The player has made it clear that he’s not rushing into any decisions and he noted that if he does return, he wants it to be with full commitment after what was statistically one of his worst seasons in the sport.
“I owe it to my teammates that if I do come back that it’s gonna be a wholehearted decision,” Kelce noted. “And I’m not half-a*sing it.”
