Severe weather brings flooding to Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Humphreys County

Loretta Lynn, country music icon, dies at 90

HURRICANE MILLS, Tenn. (WKRN) — When bad weather sweeps through the area, even iconic landmarks and tourist destinations aren’t immune from the impacts.

Multiple parts of Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky saw flash flooding over the weekend following severe storms that moved throughout the south. Many roads are still flooded, postponing repair and cleanup work in some communities.

The Humphreys County community of Hurricane Mills was one area that saw significant impacts of the extended rains over the weekend. Hurricane Mills is the home of the late Loretta Lynn’s ranch, which saw the water in Hurricane Creek grow in intensity and change in color.

Videos shared to Facebook show Hurricane Creek rapidly churning muddy brown water following the storms.

Lynn’s granddaughter, Tayla, told News 2 she estimated water levels rose due to the about 5 inches of rain they received.

Thankfully, all on the farm is fine, Tayla added.

While the creek rose, this round of storms didn’t lead to the widespread devastation the ranch suffered in August of 2021. In that flooding, the ranch saw hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage and the tragic loss of one of their own.

Wayne Spears, the ranch foreman, died while trying to save his tractor.
