Michael J. Fox Makes Surprise Speech at Actor Awards 2026

Michael J. Fox surprised fans with an appearance at the 2026 Actor Awards and brought down the house with a heartfelt speech. The 64-year-old, who has been battling young-onset Parkinson’s disease since 1991, began by looking back on how he ignored a naysayer while beginning his journey to make it in Hollywood.

Fox told the crowd, “When I left school and moved from Canada to L.A. to make it as an actor, a teacher of mine told me, ‘Fox, you’re not gonna be cute forever.’ I didn’t know what to say to that, so that’s when I said, ‘Maybe just long enough sir.’”

The beloved star then touchingly looked back on the start of his 37-year-marriage and shouted out their children, saying, “After two years of dumpster diving in L.A., I ended up on ‘Family Ties,’ where I received the biggest gift of my career. I met my wife, the actor Tracy Pollan, who played Ellen, my girlfriend. And she gave me four gifts. Schuyler, Aquinnah, Esmé, and Sam. Sometimes I like to remind them if it weren’t for acting, they wouldn’t be here.”

Fox then jested, “By the way, he’s not an actor, he’s just my date,” gesturing to 36-year-old Sam, before closing with, “I’m Michael J. Fox. I’m a dad, and I’m an actor.”

Fox won a Golden Globe in January 1998 for his performance as Mike Flaherty in ABC’s workplace comedy “Spin City,” on which he starred from 1996 to 2000. In his acceptance speech, he credited fellow nominee Jerry Seinfeld for inspiring him to “come back and do television.” He also made sure to thank his wife, saying, “I wouldn’t still be doing this if it wasn’t for you.”

The following December, he stunned the world by revealing in People magazine that he’d been fighting Parkinson’s for the past 7 years.

Michael J. Fox’s Doctor Previously Shared Hope He’d Be ‘Functional’ Until At Least 2008

Fox has dramatically surpassed his doctors’ expectations for continuing to function over the years. He revealed in the 1998 People feature that his doctor hoped he’d be “functional for at least another 10 years and maybe well into old age.”

“What I believed then and what I believe now, I might not put it in the same words, but you can do anything. Anything,” Fox told the outlet decades later in April 2024.

Weeks before his speech at the recently renamed Actor Awards, he wished a happy birthday to his 29-year-old twins. He wrote to Schuyler, “Sky- my favorite globe trotter & the worlds happiest camper… love you, love you, love you! Happy birthday dood!” and told Aquinnah, “Kiki- My all time favorite sushi mate and champion staring contest winner … happy birthday, I love you so much dood!”
