Netflix’s new disaster thriller keeps proving that critics’ opinions don’t really affect a film’s streaming popularity. At least, this is the case for Thrash.

Netflix has a long history with shark films, as its French disaster horror Under Paris became one of its most popular films of all time. Until the streamer releases the highly anticipated sequel, it has another replacement with Thrash. In just one day after its release, Thrash is already the No. 1 film in the world, FlixPatrol reports.

Thrash premiered on the platform on Apr. 10, and it became an instant global hit. The shark movie became the most popular film across the world, as it topped the charts in 90 territories, including the U.S. This comes despite a mixed reception.

Critics Trashed Thrash

After release, the survival thriller Thrash received an underwhelming 38% approval from critics out of 26 reviews. The film, despite its popularity, also managed a rare feat and features the same audience score, as well, as subscribers didn’t seem too impressed with the film.

Digital Mafia Talkies’ Pramit Chatterjee summed it up, “Thrash is basically a mixture of Crawl and Jawsthat’s suffering from an identity crisis.”
