Universal announced on Friday that The Exorcist, touted as a “brand new remake” of the classic horror film, written, directed, and produced by Mike Flanagan, and starring Scarlett Johansson, will be released on March 12, 2027.

According to our information, the studio originally planned to release the new version of the series on Friday, March 13, 2026, but changed the release date last June.

Mike Flanagan is preparing to direct a “brand new version” of “Exorcist” for Blumhouse and Morgan Creek.

Blumhouse’s Atomic Monster and Morgan Creek still hold a significant place in Universal’s previously set spring 2027 blockbuster release schedule. The only other film on the same day is Sony’s animated film Buds.

Blumhouse confirmed in May 2024 that Flanagan would be fully committed to The Exorcist, following his resounding success with franchises like The Fall of the House of Usher, Midnight Mass, and The Haunting of Hill House, as well as films like Doctor Sleep and most recently, The Life of Chuck.

Shortly after, Johansson joined the cast, followed by Jacobi Jupe of Hamnet.

Flanagan’s version was promoted as an entirely new story unrelated to the world of the Exorcist series or the latest film, The Exorcist: Believer (2023), which grossed $65.5 million in North America and $136.2 million worldwide after NBCUniversal, Peacock, and Blumhouse acquired the rights from Morgan Creek in 2021.

The Exorcist is a Blumhouse-Atomic Monster co-production with Morgan Creek Entertainment and Red Room Pictures. Producers include David Robinson (The Exorcist series, Dead Ringers series), Jason Blum (Get Out, Black Phone), and Flanagan. Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek served as executive producers.
