Real Madrid welcomed Bayern Munich to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium earlier tonight, aiming to gain an advantage in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal encounter. However, it proved to be a difficult evening for the home side, as they fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat despite a spirited second-half response.
The match began at a relatively slow tempo for Los Blancos, who struggled to impose themselves in the early stages. Bayern gradually grew into the contest and eventually made their pressure count just before halftime. In the 41st minute, Luis Diaz found the breakthrough, calmly finishing to give the visitors a deserved lead heading into the break. Real Madrid went into halftime trailing 1-0, with plenty of work left to do in the second half.
Things went from bad to worse immediately after the restart. Just a minute into the second half, Harry Kane doubled Bayern’s advantage, capitalizing on a lapse in concentration from the Madrid defense. At 2-0 down, the hosts were suddenly facing a mountain to climb in front of their home fans.
To their credit, Real Madrid did not back down. They gradually found their rhythm and began to push forward with more intent. Their persistence paid off in the 74th minute when Kylian Mbappe pulled one back. The goal came after good work from Trent Alexander-Arnold, who delivered a precise assist to set up Mbappé. The goal reignited hope among the Madrid supporters, but Bayern held firm in the closing stages to secure the win.
Individually, the Real Madrid players delivered a mixed bag of performances. The goalkeeper made a couple of crucial saves throughout the match, but ultimately could not prevent the two goals conceded. Alexander-Arnold stood out with a strong display, contributing both defensively and offensively, earning a 7.5/10 rating thanks to his assist and overall influence.
In central defense, Antonio Rudiger and Dean Huijsen had decent moments but were not entirely convincing, both receiving ratings of 6/10. Alvaro Carreras showed flashes of quality at left-back but was also responsible for a costly mistake.
In midfield, Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni worked tirelessly, offering energy and defensive stability, though neither had a major attacking impact. Thiago Pitarch Pinar struggled to get involved and was substituted after an underwhelming display.
Further forward, Arda Guler showed promise by getting into dangerous positions but lacked the finishing touch. Mbappé was one of the brighter performers, constantly threatening and eventually scoring, while Vinicius Junior was lively throughout but couldn’t add his name to the scoresheet.
Off the bench, Eder Militao provided some defensive stability, while Jude Bellingham injected energy into midfield. Brahim Diaz also made a decent contribution after coming on.
In the end, it was a frustrating night for Real Madrid, who now face a tough challenge heading into the second leg as they look to overturn the deficit.
