Fenway Sports Group head John Henry has sent a pointed message after managerial change at baseball team Boston Red Sox

Liverpool principal owner John Henry has declared Fenway Sports Group “don’t settle for mediocrity” as the Reds edge nearer the end of a disappointing season.

The outgoing Premier League champions still have work to do to seal Champions League qualification with three games remaining after they were beaten 3-2 at bitter North West rivals Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

The loss means Liverpool have now been defeated 18 times in all competitions, their most in a single campaign since suffering the same amount under Brendan Rodgers in 2014/15.

And in an interview with Sports Business Journal, Henry made his first public comment on the dismissals with a message regarding all the conglomerate’s sporting interests.

“Fans get frustrated,” said Henry. “The Sox looked terrible for (their) first 25 games. I remember a plane flying overhead when we (Liverpool) were beating Manchester United 7-0 (in 2023) that read ‘FSG OUT!’

“It doesn’t mean you ignore them, it means you work harder – you don’t settle for mediocrity. You have to win.”

Despite coming under intense scrutiny, head coach Arne Slot at present retains the faith of the Liverpool hierarchy with another squad overhaul expected in the summer given the departures of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson and doubts over the futures of several other players.

FSG also own Major League Baseball outfit Boston Red Sox and caused a stir last week by sacking manager Alex Cora and members of the backroom staff early in the season.

Liverpool fans have recently been protesting against the planned ticket price increases over the next three years, while a portion of the online support has called for Slot to become the first Reds title-winning boss to be sacked.
