The football world remains in shock following the tragic accident that claimed the lives of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva. Thousands have gathered outside Anfield and at the funeral held at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar in Portugal to pay tribute and offer condolences to the former Liverpool player and his family.
The funeral took place this Saturday and was attended by numerous sports figures, former teammates, and members of the Portuguese national team. Liverpool chartered a special flight to Portugal to allow players and staff to attend the service, ensuring a significant presence at the emotional ceremony.
Since the tragic passing of the Portuguese star, Liverpool has shown unwavering support and respect. According to Portuguese outlet Record, the club will honor the two remaining years of Diogo Jota contract by paying the full amount to his family. The football finance site Capology estimates Jota base annual salary at $995,000.
In addition, on Thursday, the club released a statement announcing plans to retire the number 20 shirt worn by Jota during his time at Anfield a number that brought joy to so many fans. Fittingly, this year Liverpool secured its 20th Premier League title, giving even greater meaning to the gesture.
Eternal Tribute
Without a doubt, this is a heartfelt and dignified move by Liverpool one that honors Diogo Jota professionalism, dedication, and love for the club, while offering much-needed support to his family during this painful time.
