What should have been a night dedicated to celebrating a rock legend quickly turned into something far more concerning.

Kelly Osbourne has hit back at what she described as “cruel and dehumanising” abuse following her appearance at the BRIT Awards, revealing she is currently enduring “the hardest time” of her life.

The 41-year-old attended the ceremony in Manchester on Saturday night (February 28) alongside her mother, Sharon Osbourne, to accept a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of her late father, Ozzy Osbourne.

It was an emotional evening for the family. Ozzy — the Black Sabbath frontman who died in July last year aged 76, just two weeks after his farewell concert in Birmingham — was honoured for a career that defined generations.

But instead of focusing on the tribute, online commentary shifted toward Kelly’s appearance.

Within hours, speculation began circulating about her weight and health – with trolls sharing their unsolicited opinions.

The following morning, Kelly addressed the backlash directly on Instagram.

“There is a special kind of cruelty in harming someone who is clearly going through something,” she wrote. “Kicking me while I’m down, doubting my pain, spreading my struggles as gossip, and turning your back when I need support and love most.

“None of it proves strength; it only reveals a profound absence of compassion and character.

“I’m currently going through the hardest time in my life. I should not even have to defend myself. But I won’t sit here and allow myself to be dehumanised in such a way.”

Her statement came after what she described as a wave of negative posts, including comments branding her “frail” and, days earlier, even “looks like a dead body.”

It is not the first time Kelly has had to publicly defend herself.

Having grown up in the spotlight during the family’s reality series The Osbournes, she has long spoken about the damaging scrutiny surrounding her body image. She has also previously dismissed speculation that her weight loss was linked to medication, insisting her transformation was achieved through lifestyle changes and surgery several years ago.

At the BRIT Awards, Kelly arrived in coordinated black with Sharon, posing together on the red carpet before taking to the stage.

During the tribute, Sharon paid an emotional homage to her late husband.

“We all know how fickle this industry can be. And my old man was blessed with a one-in-a-million career. He was at the top of his game for 56 years.

“I could go on about achievements and that, but that’s all boring crap. And the thing is, Ozzy was authentic. He was gifted, totally unpredictable, a wild man. He was a true artist.”

In a separate remark during the evening, Sharon described him as “the most humble egomaniac you could ever meet”.

The ceremony was meant to honour legacy — not dissect grief.

Yet the scrutiny continued, prompting Kelly to share a second pointed message to her Instagram Stories. Reposting a widely shared statement, she highlighted the following words: “Public grief is not public property. Grief can change a person, that doesn’t make their body a topic for debate.

“Before you comment on someone’s body, consider the possibility that they’re carrying something heavier than your opinion.”

The post continued: “It takes real strength to stand in the public eye, accepting accolades for their late iconic father and hold themselves together in front of the world.

“The least we can do is show the same grace in return. Kindness costs nothing. Cruelty costs character. It’s unsettling how quickly people will dissect someone’s appearance instead of honoring their courage. If you have the energy to comment, you have the energy to be kind. Choose accordingly.”

Kelly has been open about her grief in the months since her father’s passing, previously telling followers she has been “doing the best I can” while focusing on her young son and family.

In a later Instagram Story following the backlash, she added simply: “This too shall pass.”

Despite the online storm, many supporters flooded her page with messages of solidarity, praising her honesty and urging others to show compassion.

Grief impacts every person differently. And more people need to be made aware of that.
