Colin Jost wasted no time commenting on wife Scarlett Johansson being dethroned as Hollywood’s highest-grossing star.

Just days after Zoe Saldaña made box office history, surpassing fellow MCU star Johansson to earn the title of box office queen, Jost did what he does best, cracking a joke about it during his Weekend Update on SNL.

During the Jan. 17 segment, he shared the news, stating, “Zoe Saldaña—who stars in the new Avatar movie—has surpassed Scarlett Johansson to become the highest-grossing actress of all time.”

A bar graph of both of the leading ladies’ earnings appeared on screen as he spoke.

Instead of aiming the joke at his wife, however, Jost took a different approach, suggesting, “Okay, well let’s see what happens if you include the box office from Scarlett’s husband’s movies.”

Once he was factored into the equation, the Jurassic Park star’s earnings dropped from $15.4 billion to $15.1 billion, which definitely caught Jost by surprise.

Unable to contain his laughter, he looked around the crew, boldly asking, “It went down?!”

The Oscar-nominated actress, 40, became the highest-grossing lead actor of all time, surpassing her fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe alums Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Downey Jr., in July 2025, following a massive opening weekend for Jurassic World Rebirth.

However, she was dethroned by Saldaña, whose climb to the top comes as James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash crossed about $1.23 billion worldwide after its fourth weekend in theaters, per Variety.

As a result of the Avatar franchise, Saldaña’s films have earned a total of $16,946,884,15 at the global box office, with Johannson trailing closely in the second spot with earnings of $16,435,483,784, per The Numbers.

While both actresses are part of the MCUSaldaña has also made a name for herself in the Star Trek franchise, while Johansson appeared in a handful of other films, such as The Jungle BookSingThe Phoenician Scheme and Transformers One.

Rounding out the remaining top five spots on the list are Marvel co-stars Jackson, Downey Jr. and Chris Pratt.

As for Jost, he’s holding his own, as per The Numbers, his box office earnings sit at $488,489,123 from films like Tom & Jerry and Coming 2 America.
