For some musicians, interviews are old hat, especially the acts that have been around 20-plus years. This is the case for Tom Keifer, lead singer and guitarist for the multi-platinum-selling Cinderella. Hailed as a hybrid of hard rock and blues, Cinderella remain one of the most successful bands to emerge from the ’80s scene.
All this success means every member of the band has been interviewed a slew of times and sometimes the rockers just want to play games. This is why Noisecreep did wordplay with Tom Keifer instead. The rules? Noisecreep throws out three words or phrases, and the rock star says whatever he wants.

Hair band — “I guess to some people it carries a negative connotation. I think to the fans ‘hair band’ is just ‘hair band.’ To the industry it carries some sort of negative black plague. Honestly it’s kind of a funny word to me, because most rock bands have a lot of hair. It’s kind of funny that the ’80s rock bands got this title dubbed on them. I don’t feel any particular way. I think it means different things to different people. It’s always unfair to judge music with your eyes. Judge it with your ears. A lot of bands in the ’80s may have looked the same, but man they were different sound-wise! There was a lot of variety. Some of the bands were really great and some weren’t, but it’s all a matter of opinion. Lumping things together is not cool and that’s what that term does and I think it’s not fair.”
Women — “Awesome!” [A hearty laugh followed this answer].
MTV — “That’s a complicated one. There were really positive things about it and also some really negative things. The positive was that it caused a revolution; an explosion of creativity, because you had this visual component to add to your music. From a marketing standpoint, it was so positive because that new visual art combined with music led to an explosion of record sales and great things. The downside was that it was a mystique killer. It almost made the music and the artists too accessible and maybe that’s not a great thing. You know, so many good things came out of it, and there’s always a good and bad to everything. Certainly we benefited greatly from it, as did a lot of other bands. I guess it’s a positive word for me. I don’t necessarily like where it’s gone! I think when it started it was really cool.”
Keifer will hit the road with Cinderella this summer to “burn down a big tour,” which includes a headlining spot on the music cruise ShipRocked . He will also release his long-awaited solo album, and the band may write a new album together in the near future. Cinderella’s latest album was the 2009 release ‘Authorized Bootleg: Live at the Tokyo Dome — Tokyo, Japan Dec. 31 1990.’
