Adria Arjona is officially entering the new DCU. The actress landed the coveted role of Maxima in James Gunn‘s “Superman” sequel, “Man of Tomorrow.”
Fans had previously expressed that Arjona would make a great Wonder Woman — and the DC Studios co-chief agreed — but it turns out that this part was perfect for the “Andor” star.
Last week, Variety reported that Arjona tested for the key role — Maxima is an alien queen who has been both an antagonist and a potential love interest for Superman in the comics — alongside finalists Eva De Dominici (“The Cleaning Lady”), Sydney Chandler (“Alien: Earth”) and Grace Van Patten (“Tell Me Lies”). A deal was said to be imminent with cameras about to roll on set in Atlanta as the production got underway. (The DC movie is set for release on July 9, 2027.)
In “Superman: Man of Tomorrow,” written and directed by Gunn, David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult return as the Man of Steel and Lex Luthor. However, this time, the legendary adversaries are forced to work together to defeat an even bigger threat: the super-intelligent antagonist Brainiac (played by German star Lars Eidinger). The ensemble cast also features Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific) and Aaron Pierre (John Stewart/Green Lantern).
Arjona’s boyfriend, Jason Momoa, is also a key part of Gunn’s new DCU; after playing Aquaman in six movies, the actor will play the anti-hero Lobo in “Supergirl,” in theaters June 26.
As mentioned, Arjona is best known in the world of genre entertainment for her standout performance in the Star Wars series “Andor.” Her resumé also includes “Hit Man,” “Splitsville,” “Father of the Bride,” and “Blink Twice.” Arjona is next set to star opposite Michael B. Jordan in his “Thomas Crown Affair” remake for Amazon MGM Studios. She is repped by CAA, Anonymous Content, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Goodman Genow.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported Arjona won the part. DC Studios declined to comment on the casting.
