When Melania Trump married her husband, now the president, in 2005, many thought, given their 24-year age gap, that Melania might’ve been in the marriage for more than just love.

Especially now that Melania very rarely shows any signs of affection for her husband, it’s not entirely hard to believe that she could’ve married Trump for his money.

However, an interview from 1999 has resurfaced showing Melania’s reaction to being confronted with this idea, and quickly told her interviewer, “you don’t know me.” Keep reading for more information.

Resurfaced Interview Shows Melania’s Not In It For The Money

In 1999, just one year after the pair went public with their relationship, Melania sat for an ABC News interview. She was 26 at the time. The interviewer, Don Dahler, asked about her and Trump’s relationship, and Melania wasted no time saying the public has the wrong idea.

“You know, the people, they don’t me,” she said. “People who talk like this, they don’t know me.” And when the interviewer pointed out that not many 26-year-old supermodels end up with someone 24-years their senior, she explained, “You know what, you can sleep or to hug or to talk with beautiful things , with beautiful apartment, beautiful plane, beautiful cars, beautiful houses, you can’t do that.”

Melania Tells Fans You ‘Don’t Know Me’

She continued, saying if someone did marry for the money , “You could feel very empty. And if somebody said, ‘You’re with the man because he’s rich and famous,’ they don’t know me.”

This wasn’t the only invasive question she answered in this interview. Dahler also asked her if she could picture herself as the First Lady of the United States, to which she answered, “Yes, I would be very traditional like Jackie Kennedy. I will support him, I will do a lot of social obligations.”

“I would stand by [my] man,” she added.
