Sam Altman and Elon Musk have a fierce war of words!

Two American technology billionaires are truly enemies!
Yesterday, a war of words broke out on social network X between Elon Musk and Sam Altman, starting with Sam Altman being “irritated” when Elon Musk accused Apple of monopoly, colluding with Open AI to have ChatGPT everywhere in the App Store, while his X and Grok were pushed far below. But that was just the last straw in a simmering war involving personal interests, business competition, and historical conflicts in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

Sam Altman and Elon Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 with the goal of developing AI for the benefit of humanity. However, Musk left the organization in 2018 due to disagreements over direction, especially when OpenAI began to shift from a non-profit model to partnerships with companies like Microsoft and a focus on profit.
Musk has recently sued OpenAI twice (2024 and 2025) to stop this transition, accusing them of abandoning their original mission. This has created personal and professional tensions between the two.
In terms of competition, Elon Musk, as the leader of xAI, is in direct competition with OpenAI (under Altman). Musk’s latest legal battle is against Apple (August 12, 2025), accusing them of violating antitrust laws by favoring OpenAI in the App Store, putting xAI at a disadvantage. This was the main motivation for Musk’s post.

Altman responded by criticizing Musk, suggesting that Musk himself manipulated the X algorithm to favor xAI and hurt competitors (including OpenAI). This reflects the fierce competition between the two leading AI companies. Altman cited a study from Queensland University of Technology (2024) that found that Musk’s post views on X increased by 138% after July 2024, suggesting that Musk manipulated the X algorithm (which he has owned since acquiring it in 2022) for his own promotion. The image accompanying Altman’s post illustrates this. The
X community and EU investigations (starting in 2025) are also looking into similar allegations of Musk manipulating the platform, escalating the controversy. Altman took the opportunity to “hit back” publicly, with his post reaching 3 million views, despite Musk having 50 times more followers.
But is this just a fight?
Absolutely not! Remember, both are highly influential figures who often use X to shape public opinion. Musk has a direct, sometimes controversial style, while Altman prefers intelligent counterarguments, based on data and well-founded accusations.
This war of words is not only personal, but also a strategy to attract attention to their products (Grok from xAI and ChatGPT from OpenAI), especially as both compete to lead the AI market.
The fierce “war of words” on X between Sam Altman and Elon Musk is the result of a combination of personal conflicts from OpenAI, commercial competition in the AI industry, and strategic use of social media to shape their image. With the ongoing legal landscape and public pressure, this dispute is likely to continue, especially as both continue to defend their interests in public. #samaltmanvsElonmusk
