21 Years Ago Today, a Future History-Making Country Star Was at No. 1 With Her Debut Album

On this day (April 3) in 2005, Miranda Lambert was at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart with her debut album Kerosene. It was the first of seven chart-topping albums for the Texas native. Later in her career, she would make country music history with her long list of award wins.
Lambert’s singing career began when she was still in high school. When she was 21, she independently released her self-titled debut album and began to tour more seriously in the Texas region. Then, in 2003, she landed a spot on the singing competition show Nashville Star. After nine weeks on the show, she finished third. However, she had impressed the show’s judge and Sony Music executive Tracy Gershon. She helped Lambert land a recording contract with Sony’s Epic Records subsidiary.
A year later, she released “Me and Charlie Talking,” the first of four singles from her major label debut. All four tracks reached the top 40 of the country chart, and the title track broke into the top 20, peaking at No. 15. It also landed at No. 61 on the Hot 100, giving her some early crossover success.
The LP release was more successful. Kerosene debuted at No. 1 on the country albums chart and was later certified Platinum. This success led to tours with Keith Urban, George Strait, Dierks Bentley, and Toby Keith, exposing her to a wide country audience.
Miranda Lambert’s Record-Breaking Award Wins
Miranda Lambert has taken home a long list of awards in her career. In fact, she has won more Academy of Country Music Awards than any artist. In total, she has won 35 ACM Awards, including the Triple Crown Award, which she won in 2023. That milestone award commemorated her taking home Top New Female Vocalist, Top Female Vocalist, and Entertainer of the Year.
In 2018, Lambert won her ninth consecutive Female Vocalist of the Year Award from the ACM. This broke the record previously held by eight-time winner Reba McEntire.
Lambert was also the first woman to win the CMA Award for Album of the Year twice. Revolution (2009) and Platinum (2014) brought her those trophies.
