Tommy Fleetwood has finally claimed his first PGA Tour victory after winning the FedEx Cup title on Sunday. Soon after, he gained some recognition from a golf legend as Tiger Woods took to social media to give him props.
“Your journey is a reminder that hard work, resilience, and heart do pay off,” Woods wrote on X. “No one deserves it more. Congrats @TommyFleetwood1!”
Since joining the tour in 2018, Fleetwood, from England, has been close to several wins in his career to this point. He, in those 163 events, has made the cut 139 times, has 44 finishes in the top-ten, and six finishes apiece in second place and in third place. Still, with millions of dollars won as well as eight wins internationally, Fleetwod had yet to win outright on the PGA Tour.
Fleetwood finished his tremendous week-long effort Sunday with a 68 to post a winning score of 262 (-18). With the win, he also claimed the $10 million prize that comes with winning the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup.
“I’m proud of what I’ve done before,” Fleetwood said of his first career win, per CBS. “Whether I’ve won or not [before], I’ve still been proud of my career and where I’ve been so far, knowing that I still have a long way to go and a lot to learn. This doesn’t change that, really. This is just, hopefully, one win — the first of many to come. You can’t win plenty if you don’t win the first one. I’m just so happy that I got it done. Happy with my work ethic. I’ll continue to try and get better, try to be the best I can be.”
After failing to convert 54-hole leads in three previous tries across his career, Tommy Fleetwood outlasted a strong chasing pack that tried to take him down. He never gave up his lead, though at one point saw it trimmed to one stroke. All the while celebrities such as LeBron James and Caitlin Clark cheered him on.
“What a start so far by Fleetwood! Feels like (today) is the day,” posted James on Twitter.
“This has to be Fleetwood’s day,” Clark tweeted too.
Ultimately, they would be correct as Fleetwood hung on and won by three strokes over second place Patrick Cantlay and Russell Henley (-15). Now he’s earned the right to celebrate and added Tiger Woods to the list of people cheering him on.
