Some of the most famous faces in the music industry today have their roots firmly in the country with a strong link to Christianity but not everyone in the genre is religious

When it comes to country music, the genre is deeply rooted in southern culture and traditions, so it perhaps comes as no surprise that Christianity is a common theme.

Many of country’s most famous faces are also known to love their religion as much as they love performing with the likes of Reba McEntire, Carrie Underwood, Dolly Parton, Luke Bryan, Tim McGraw, and even more modern faces such as Morgan Wallen, all making their religious beliefs well-known. But for some rare stars of the country music scene,e their passion for singing does not go hand in hand with a spiritual belief.

When it comes to music, many genres are linked to faith – including, of course, gospel, but even rap and hip-hop have sub-genres focused on Christianity. However, some just really want to deliver their own message through their art, with three huge country stars admitting they’re not religious.

Known for her work as a country singer/songwriter, Lucinda has also contributed to Americana and contemporary folk, creating some huge hits. But many are surprised to learn that she is in fact not Christian and has previously stated that religion isn’t for her.

She told KQED, “God shows up in all different kinds of ways. It’s just more about love. I don’t consider myself a Christian or a religious person. Probably a lot of people would echo these sentiments, but it’s just more some kind of energy force, or field, or something that I know is there. I’m not sure what it is, but I know it’s something and it’s there, because I’ve felt it before. We’re not just living in this empty void.”

Kacey Musgraves

While Kacey has never fully denounced religion, she has said several things to make it known that she prefers to be more spiritual without tagging herself as any one thing in particular. In 2024, she confessed that for her, “nature is God.”

She explained: “I think the word God is used in so many expansive ways, and everyone’s got their own interpretation of that. For me, that’s nature.” Her 2024 album Deeper Well also follows the themes of existentialism, existence, and theology as opposed to religion.

Linda is known not just for her country offerings but for venturing into multiple genres, including folk, rock, pop, and even Latin music. She has made it known in the past that she is not a religious person at all.

Talking on NPR’s The Tavis Smiley Show in 2013, she said: “I’m a spiritual atheist.”
