ABC News anchor David Muir interrupted the regular broadcast on Monday evening with a significant update from the White House, announcing that new tariffs ordered by President Donald Trump are scheduled to go into effect at midnight.

The ABC presenter informed viewers that the president is slapping a 100% tariff on all chips and semiconductors imported into the U.S., a decision that could hike the prices of electronics, home appliances, and cars.

“So what will this mean for the cost of electronics here in America?” Muir, who has been criticized this year by fans, questioned before handing over to senior correspondent Mary Bruce.

“They’re coming home,” Trump proclaimed, touting the move as evidence that his economic strategy is working.

Apple has committed to using American-made glass from Kentucky for its iPhones and Apple Watches, although the tech giant fell short of fulfilling Trump’s longstanding request for iPhones to be completely manufactured in the U.S., reports the Express US.

“This is a significant step toward the ultimate goal of ensuring that iPhones sold in the United States of America also are made in America,” Trump stated.

David Muir criticized President Trump’s tariffs.

Trump highlighted that businesses producing or pledging to produce domestically would be exempt from certain taxes. “If you’re building in the United States or have committed to build in the United States, there will be no charge,” he declared.

The segment sparked a flurry of reactions across social media from both fans and detractors. “No charge? ? ? Really? Sounds like another break for corporate America,” one user expressed their skepticism.

“Guess I’ll be using my phone for the next 4 years,” quipped another in response to the news.

Some critics pointed fingers at Trump for economic woes, with one person asserting, “He’s purposely tanking our economy,” while another sarcastically commented, “I’m starting to think his middle name is tariff.”

Earlier this week Muir stepped away from World News Tonight on Thursday evening, the news cycle continued without pause, as his stand-in, Whit Johnson, swiftly updated audiences on a harrowing incident that unfolded aboard a transatlantic flight.

The ABC broadcast wasted no time getting underway with Johnson leading the charge, briefing viewers on additional developments including widespread tariffs impacting American consumers, before shifting focus to the gripping aviation story.

Audiences found themselves captivated as Johnson revealed the details. This followed the previous evening’s coverage of a soldier who opened fire on five individuals at a military installation in Georgia.

Johnson, 43, briefed his audience about the alarming events that transpired, acknowledging that footage had emerged capturing the entire ordeal.

“Now, to the midair scare on a transatlantic flight,” Johnson announced. “A passenger’s mobile charger sparking a fire, the crew racing to put it out, and the dramatic new video coming in tonight.”
