I thought being Elon Musk’s neighbor was a dream… but it turned into a nightmare
Thinking that being neighbors with a billionaire is something to brag about, the residents here quickly became disillusioned when Elon Musk brought with him a fleet of Teslas and a series of troubles.
For months, residents of the quiet West Lake Hills villa in the suburbs of Austin, Texas, have been living in an atmosphere of discontent since Elon Musk moved into a nearly 650 square meter villa worth 6 million USD, according to The New York Times. They were not introduced, not warned, only saw a 5 meter high wire mesh fence, cameras facing the street, automatic iron gates and a fleet of Tesla cars parked at the entrance. The security team changes shifts three times a day, sometimes carrying guns, making many people feel unsafe.
The leader of the complaints is Paul Hemmer, a resident who lives across from Musk’s villa and is currently the president of the local residents’ association. In a letter to the Planning and Zoning Commission, Mr. Hemmer described the situation of “transporting clothes, employees back and forth, and parking encroaching on the street” that has completely disrupted the peace of the neighborhood. The petition was co-signed by all the remaining households.

The city of West Lake Hills confirmed that Mr. Musk and his team had violated six building regulations, including erecting a metal fence that was taller than the permitted limit and installing an iron gate without a permit. After being discovered, Musk’s team tried to legalize the project by filing an application for a “special circumstances exception”.
But the Planning Commission overwhelmingly rejected the request at its meeting last month. “If we approve it, we will be encouraging a violation of the law,” said Commissioner Jim Pledger. City records show that Musk hired a permit expert and argued that it was “necessary for the safety of a public figure,” but the commission was not convinced.

Despite Musk’s rare appearances at the house, which he frequently visits in Washington to advise President Trump, his neighbors are particularly concerned about the presence of a “fortress” in the middle of a neighborhood that values privacy and tranquility. The fact that Musk owns three adjacent villas here, where he lives with his children and their mothers, including singer Grimes and Neuralink director Shivon Zilis, further complicates the situation.
The incident has now become a battle between the “world’s richest man” and the local law system. And it confirms one thing: no one is so rich that they can ignore the common rules of the community.
